Bathroom blues!

last modified: 4 years ago

I mentioned some very long months ago that I was remodeling a bathroom and was asked to post pics when finished. It is finally done! I know this is not to today's tastes, but my house is a 1983 NW contemporary style, so much of what is on trend would not work here. I cannot capture the blues with my camera for some reason; it's not as gray as this looks, but is a really rich non-baby blue. I removed the tub and the smallish fiberglass shower, which was separate, and put in a larger shower. Not huge but adequate. This is the main floor/guest bath. I fell in love with this flowered tile and just had to use it.

This is a truer blue - both the wall and floor- my contractor shot this. There are two pendant lights, but I can't get both in a pic. New huge closet in the background - 3 floor to ceiling doors.

This looks very gray, but it's not at all.

Oly, it looks wonderful! Wow, loving the tiles, great choices! Great-looking cabinets and other wood tones, they look perfect with that blue.

I’m a big fan of ’80’s PNW contemporary houses, love that you kept it in that style!

I love it! I especially swoon over the beautiful wood cabinetry and how it plays against the floor tile. I also really appreciate that you created something unique and in keeping with the style of the house, yet fresh and new at the same time. Beautiful!

The blue is very pretty wit the wood and love the unusual tile. I can’t focus on the art—-what is it? It’s so nice to see really nice a unique, interesting space rather than the ubiquitous generic style.

Thank you all for your kind remarks! @lisaam, the art is a painting/collage. The image is a vessel, there is a nude woman with her back to us, kind of floating on/in it. There are pieces of torn paper as well as beads integrated in the surrounding area. I bought it so many years ago I don’t even remember where I found it.

thank you! @Kswl the countertop is Pental quartz Ice Lake. I was loathe to put quartz in this house but it was hard to find other options that would be light and bright enough to go with the flower tile. And when I saw this one, I kind of loved it. The flower tile has a bunch of subtle tones besides the cream, blue and black, from grays and taupe to brassy/bronze; the quartz has some subtle shading that worked.

Really like the blue and how nicely it compliments the wood vanity and trim. Also like the sink. LOVE the tile, would have been tempted to tile entire space.

    Great job!

Thank you everyone for the nice comments. What a kind group we have here. I post separately on the Bathrooms forum and braced myself for the critic trolls, but so far, so good! @mdln oh, I considered doing a whole wall of that flower tile. My original thought was the area above the sink with a framed mirror on it and wall sconces, but the tile was $$$ and I realized it was just going to look like wallpaper if I did that, plus half would be covered by a mirror. I also really wanted tile backsplash on the side walls, which I think is pretty much frowned upon, and I thought it would look even weirder if I did that and a whole wall of tile, too. I was going to do just one tile high around the vanity area, but the choices for faucets for vessel sinks are so tall, that it would have been reflected in the mirror if I made the tile row shorter. So we raised it to 1.5 tiles and I liked it better. The flower tile is quite a bit thicker than regular tile, so it limited how I could use it in the shower without more expense and hassle, so I just backed the niche with it. I put in a grab bar shelf to hold dispensers for shampoo, conditioner and body wash and left the niche for guests to use for their products.
@User, yes Society6 for the rug. I really like it, tho didn't realize it was memory foam, which isn't my favorite. I struggled more to find rugs than any other item. I like one at the sink but the door catches on them if they are too wide. The color is better in person than the photos, but I worry that it's one too many clowns in the room. What do you all think? I have a plain white one that I use sometimes.

Thanks for the feedback! I've considered Society6 but it's hard to tell how the quality is from their photos.

I love the print on that rug, but I do think it's quite a different design style than the rest of the room. I agree that a solid off white would work better.

If you have the wherewithal, you can shave a little off the bottom of your door to prevent rugs from catching.

Thank you again for your nice comments. @User, I think you're right about the rug. It is so pretty and has an Asian feel that vibes with some things in the room, but it's just "off." I wanted a simple white one with a black border (like is hanging in the shower). I actually bought that one for in front of the vanity but it's too large, but I cannot find one the right size =/. The bathroom door is hollowcore, so I don't think it can be shaved. It's actually not the bottom of the door but the corner of it that hits the rug. I had the depth of the vanity shortened, hoping to make it easier to place a rug there but that didn't work well enough. Oh, and the Society6 rug is very nice quality. Great service from them, too. I accidentally ordered the wrong thing but caught it quickly, however, it was past their window for changes. I got a hold of a very nice person who tracked down the order and made the change for me.

Hollow core doors have an interior frame on all four sides, approximately 1" thick. You could very likely trim off 1/4" w/o a problem. If you did accidentally trim off too much, a block of wood can be glued inside to reinforce it.

I also have a door that's too low, and have been too lazy to trim off the bottom. I looked into Chilewich mats, which have an extremely flat profile and are skid resistant.... and you can order custom sizes! They're kind of expensive and not cozy, but it seems like they could add at least a slight amount of padding and insulation from cold tiles if that's what you're seeking. You can order sample swatches if you're unsure.

Yes, Society6 does have great service! I ordered a shower curtain that was not well printed enough for me. The replacement was equally bad, so they let me keep both and gave me a full refund! I kept them. (The print is not seriously bad, I just thought it could have been better considering how much it cost.) They don't need a liner and you can wash them in bleach!
