They drown if they do not exit water. Although it is reasonable to assume that not all species behave the same when they encounter water, we often read to insert cuttings through holes in container lids (instead of omitting lids). I can tell you that Monarch caterpillars are "as dumb as a door", as one lady puts it. I often find drowned very little Monarchs in mere drops of rain water in container. Conversely, I always find the large out water of even significant amount.

Note that I very often find one or another dead Polydamas among the live; no water. Yours is not black, so, if dead, it died very recently.
