The first ever bloom on EaB. I didn't get many this year, but the plant did put on a lot of growth. I'm hoping next year is full of blooms! The color was fantastic at first, now in the high 90's heat they're opening much more pink and are smaller.

Oursteelers, that is absolutely glorious!!

I have a very old rose growing in front of the house, we found it here when we moved in. Very tall shrub, stiff canes, thorny. Very strong, wafting fragrance. Once-blooming. The colour changes quickly and fades to an amazing violet hue. The only rose i could find any similarity with is Gypsy Boy. Could this be Gypsy Boy?

Carol, did you report yours or put it in the ground? Mine absolutely took off since planting in-ground, though I know you're limited in space. There are other Geschwind roses I think are gorgeous but it seems HMF claims they all have little to no scent. What a shame.

My EaB is still potted. I have to prepare his home in the garden, and the weather has set me behind. Working in my yard is like standing and digging in quicksand! I have to tiptoe across the ”lawn”. 😳

Do Houzz photos do live action? If so, you’ll hear the rain dumping in this one. There was a river running down the street yesterday! BUT there’s sunshine coming this week!

Lawns are overrated. My husband disagrees but I'm fighting the good fight against him LOL. I really enjoy seeing your garden. Can I show up with baked goods and take a tour? Lol.

Schonste doesn’t have smy fragrance which for me usually mean thanks but no thanks however I really wanted to grow it with Orden so I had to suck it up

Sniff something nearby and pretend the perfume came from those magnificent blooms! 😊

One last photo before dinner. This thread reminded me to pop out to check on my EaB bloom before sunset. The baby bloom miraculously opened during our skinny sunbreaks today! 🎉 Yes, that little raspberry-violet bit of fluff smells sweetly delicious.

I love this thread. I'm so glad someone started it. A few years ago I was looking for a rose called Elizabeth of Goshen. I found a nursery that said they carried it and it was available so I bought it. Or so I thought. The rose seemed to want to climb. It was healthy and shrugged off late freezes. It didn't bloom that year or the next. It did bloom the following year, covered with cup-shaped, deep pink/red/purple roses that bloomed in small clusters. At first I thought their fragrance was faint at best but I brought some into the house, put them in the kitchen window and the fragrance wafted throughout the (very small) kitchen. They seem to be once bloomers but bloomed for about a month here. I checked the nursery's inventory list on HMF, found several Geschwind roses and put two and two together.

I'm sorry I don't have photos. I don't know enough about Geschwind roses to know which one it likely is. Maybe this will help me figure it out. I never would have chosen this rose but I'm glad to have it.

I got Erinnerrung an Brod from Burling last year as a one gallon. This year it is a 6 x 7 feet bush. The mauve color blooms seems to be small.

This is Geschwind's Schönste, second year in the ground. I expect it will grow huge!

Oh I love all these photos! So big and luxurious-they seem so over top. If mine grow up like yours I will be very thankful.

Mine are in those tree nursery pots because the dirt over there is just crap. It will be interesting to see if they can still look as good as y’alls!

El Ariana, rose-gold colour that fades to white. Sets long lasting hips btw.

Excuse the messy front garden - the mown paths are not-so-mown at the moment!

Second year with Erinnerung an Brod - more flowers this year, but I'm sure this one would like a sunnier position than my east-facing wall. Lovely colour, medium-large blooms, strong perfume.

@portlandmysteryrose Okay if I'm ever in your area I'm going to bug you for a tour! Bearing gifts, of course lol. 😜 Also my iris patch is a little small this year because I had to build the remaining rhizomes back up after majorly thinning and old non-blooming bed of them that came with the house, but hopefully next summer I can nab some extras to send to you if you still want them at that point.

I also want to tour Sheila’s property. I may or may not move into the barn😬

@portlandmysteryrose: the part of the garden you saw in the photo is the lower level of my garden, not a lower balcony/terrace. That area is about 6 feet wide and 30 feet long in the north side of my garden. I planted that area with various old garden roses which require more space to spread out.

I really love my 4.91 acres, but it is a work in progress. I'm pulling out excess euphorbias this morning, deadheading, and I could plant a few pots. I have a variety of classes of roses so it would be difficult to pick a favorite.

Thank you for the info on your garden! I love seeing slices of it. Your roses are gorgeous! I am currently debating with myself about 2 spots to site my Erinnerung an Brod. As you said, some of these old roses need space to spread out! And my tiny urban garden is the living definition of ”absence of space”.

@murasaki_rx That is a gorgeous rose! I don’t grow Gypsy Boy, but your rose looks a bit different than @MetteBee_Copenhagen8b’s rose in Denmark. It could be climate effects or it could be your rose has another identitity. MetteBee, what do you think of the similarities? Murasaki, if you post an ID question on both the Roses and Antique Roses forum with photos of buds, open flowers, foliage and canes along with info like remontancy, I’ll bet someone will offer an ID. Also knowing your climate will help. I recall your mentioning that you are in the Middle East, I think? Carol

What an amazing rose. I'll have to go and check the leaves thorns etc. of Gypsy Boy to be sure. Mind you, my plant is young and the flowers are a bit smaller than I expect them to be in the future.

I have gone through many rose sites trying to id this rose, and the only similarity i could find was Gypsy Boy, but that too only to a certain degree...

@murasaki_rx Thank you for the climate info! Hopefully, someone on the Antique Roses or Roses forum can help. There’s a lot of knowledge here! With more info, I’ll try digging around in my rose books. I’m not the best at ID, but sometimes I get lucky and strike ID gold. I do see red in the foliage which hints at China rose ancestry and the foliage looks a bit glossier and more “modern” than Geshwinds I have seen. Carol

Oh my, Orden is pretty! So many roses, so little space...

Foliage is matte and blackspot prone. Quite thorny. The flower is very densely packed but shows it stamens enough to form hips.

It is the shape of the flowers as they fade that makes me think that Murasaki's rose is something different... I'll keep thinking about it ;)

Indeed, the shape looks a bit different, and mine is not this deep wine red, a bit more pink and then quickly changes to something like ashen violet. Mine tries to set hips as well, but somehow they shrivel and get dark brown instead of becoming round and colourful.

What i can also say it's that it blooms very early, the first rose to do so, and it hasn't repeated flower at all. But it is in a place where grapevine starts to grow and make a lot of shade after the rose finished blooming, so maybe that prevents it to bloom again.

and i found pics with buds as well, you said that aspect was important too.

I will keep you informed if i get any more suggestions.

Murasaki, You might post the photos on a new thread for the Roses and Antique Roses Forums and ask in the title: “Is this Cl. American Beauty?” That way, a number of people who grow Cl. AB can confirm or not. I know there are several on the forums. I don’t grow Cl. AB, so I can’t add any photos or a positive ID, but I have seen that cultivar in person and on HMF and your rose looks a lot like it from what I remember.

Wow, i can see a great similarity, yes! I don't know how available this rose might have been around here, though, in the old days, but maybe someone made a trip to America and brought back some cuttings. That would be some great story😅😍
