Strong Beginning, but Ominous Future

The plants here were strong after one of the wettest Mays on record. I had to constantly trim foliage. But now heat and increasing dryness are a countervailing force to a good season.

John Karl Seager has been lovely

Elizabeth Caldwell is a large early bloomer.

Grace Like Rain has the best bud count I have seen on it. This is typical of many in the garden. But the winter/spring had a different effect on some others.

The Band Played On

Tar and Feather has been a brilliant accent. Again, higher bud count than usual. There are three clumps of this scattered around. Too much sun makes picture taking difficult, as I would prefer not to take a sun shot.

Aerial Applique has never looked so good. Good bud count and unusual height for here. So lovely in the garden!

Echo Echo is an excellent Gossard with good height. Also in the garden, as well as this pot.

Still the One is a favorite.

Some blooms of Clown Parade are faded from the heat.

Pumpkin Prince has been very good (better opening than some years). It must have known that it was a candidate for elimination.

Toucan Sam--a joy to behold.

Some cultivars are on shorter scapes this year, but many others the opposite. For example, Jessica Lynn Bell again on short scapes. Bells and Trimmers were most affected by something. It was more of a Zone 5 winter here, but cultivars may like the steady cold of that zone. Caribbean Whipped Cream has nearly all scapes much taller than usual, around 24-27 inches, with one shorter. Gorgeous, but sun makes shots difficult.

What a great clump of Regale lilies. Several pinks I like, but my favorite is Toucan Sam.

How did you get so lucky with the wettest May on record, when my May was the driest in at least 25 years? The lilies and daylilies look fabulous. I especially like Still the One and Spunky Girls.

Very nice group. John Karl Seager caught my eye with all those buds. Wow, imagine it with all those buds open. I think that here too with some of the daylilies I'm getting a lot more scapes due to the amount of rain we keep getting OR it could be they are finally able to all come up without the deer trimming I got last year. Heat and humidty has once again cleared out here but not for long.

Can I just say rhat I love the word countervailing? No one uses it much.

You look as though you have lots of buds-probably due to the wet spring? I do like seeing Elizabeth Caldwell. Still the One-lovely. Looking forward to more.

Had a near record wet soring here, then came dry and hot June. some erarly bloomers havent faired very well. Photos of Still the One do not do this daylily justice, gotta see it in person.

I like that Regale Lily. Can you plant Lilies directly in your soil or do you have raised beds?..........Since I like a good warm yellow, I have to go with your picture of Mister Butters as my favorite..................Maryl

Beautiful group. We had lots of spring rains [not as much as you or the past couple of years] but now rather dry but the daylilies are ok so far.

I really love Elizabeth Caldwell-form and color and size; Spunky Girls, also form, color and size, and The Band Played On, & Aerial Applique, same reasons. These are the type I really enjoy. Several others also fill the bill.
