If you go to the Kohler website and look at the Whitehaven specs, you should be able to find the installation instructions and it will tell you what size cabinet for the sink.

It depends upon how your sink base is made as to which will fit, which is why the installation instructions become important. I am not familiar with Ikea, but most sink bases that are 36" wide would have two false drawer fronts on the top and the frame would have holes cut out slightly smaller than the drawer fronts. If this is the case with the sink base you have ordered, then the 30" Whitehaven sink would not cover the holes in the frame once you removed the false drawer fronts. Generally you would want the wider sink in order to match up with the sink base. You can also order the Whitehaven with either a short apron front or a tall apron front. I believe one is 6" and the other is 9". You have to know how much space you have from the top of the sink base doors to the top of the cabinet in order to know which one will fit with your cabinet. We had a homeowner purchase the 6" for her kitchen and she could have used the 9" and it would have looked better. Just takes careful measuring.

Hi there! What did you decide on? We are struggling to decide between a fireclay sink and the kohler whitehaven. The latter is so expensive! Really interested in what is easier to maintain. Meaning, which is more stain and chip/crack resistant. Help?

Fireclay is unsuitable sink material. The Whitehaven has a long good history. Look at the Elkay Quartz Luxe please. Unlike the other two, the color goes all the way through.

@Melanie Lane - I've decided to go with the Kohler Whitehaven. I'd never go with fireclay. too many issues that I've heard of.

Thanks for your responses! My concern with the whitehaven is the chipping off of enamel and rusting. It sounds to me from what I’ve read that this happens with them after about 5-10 years. Or staining because the enamel has cracks in it.
I will look at the Elkay Quartz Luxe, however I wondered if it was prone to staining...

Hi Design Girl, yes however my concern is more with the fact that once installed undermount with stone countertops any of these sinks will be very costly and risky to replace. Have you been using your whitehaven for some time now?

@M L - My remodel hasn't started yet, but have many friends that have it. They all use the rack for the sink and no one has had any problems. However, I understand that even though you'd get a replacement sink if something happened, the replacement would be on you. Joseph Cortlett above is the sink guru and can do anything. I'm hoping if needed I could find someone to do the job. However, it does make me think about a good quality stainless steel under mount.

Yes exactly! I find it all so annoyingly time consuming, I’ve been doing research on and off for many weeks now and feel no closer to a decision. Stainless steel is fine and I know it’s very durable but I admit I just love the glossy off-white look in an apron sink style! I can’t help it. Then again, a good quality brushed stainless steel sink is less costly and they are probably the least worrisome when it comes to issues down the road...

It won't be if you disregard the manufacturer's installation instructions and install the sink with a Pete's Sink Mount Kit. The manufacturer specified wood blocking is difficult to access, the Pesimoki is not. I'd change an undermount Whitehaven in less than two hours, plumbing included, with virtually no risk to the tops.

Throw those clips that come with the sink in the trash too please. Leaking junk, and if your top is engineered stone you just voided the warranty if you drill the top to install them.

Design girl - this may or may not be helpful to you, but the more research I do on how the kohler whitehaven holds up over the years the less inclined I am to get one. For such a speedy investment I don’t want to have to deal with changing it out due to chips or cracks in the enamel. I keep coming across owners saying their sink looks old and yellowed or chipped and rusted not that long into owning it. At that price point I don’t want he headaches. Gah!! They are just so darn beautiful though! All the best with your decision making!

@ML - That's sad to hear. I also wonder how many of these people take proper care of things? Perhaps they do. I'm a neat freak of sorts and very careful. I'd always use the sink grate. UGH - I really don't want an under mount but who knows. I'll probably spend more for the under mount because I don't want to buy from China.

@josephcorlett I need a 24-27 inch max size sink. I notice the Elkay Quartz Luxe is bigger and we just wouldn’t have the room. I’ve come across the Blanco Ikon now and am considering that in white. I’m hoping this is quite similar to your recommendation?

@M L - I've seen that and imo it has a really weird and unattractive apron front. It's angled and looks odd. I'm now debating a nice stainless steel apron front. My current white sink is Corian and it stains quite easily. Forget pasta night, the whole sink is orange. I also notice a lot of gray scratches on the surface from pots and pans. It does clean up with soft scrub but something about the dull white finish is unappealing to me.

And I too felt exactly the same as you about the slant on the sink and the finish not being glossy!! Which is why I ruled it out early on. However, the more I see pictures of them installed I don’t feel it’s so noticeable and I’ve been chatting with people who own them and they love them!

I've got an integrated Corian sink now. It's been in the kitchen for years and I'll be starting the kitchen reno in March. I just can't get past the slant, but that's me. I don't know if i'd have the same staining problem either. What kind of look are you going for, It could make a difference in your selection.

Isn’t it funny how barely noticeable the slope is?? I’m impressed anyway haha. I can’t even tell in most pictures of it once it’s been installed! We are going for transitional I suppose. Classic, but with some modern touches and some warmth from wood too. I have pretty eclectic taste ☺️

@M L - I'm going for transitional as well. White cabinets, marble counters, wood floors. I guess my design eye really picks up on the sloped sides. I've also read reviews that say the the sink chips and scratches easily and that it shows water spots. Who knows, I'm beginning to think a quality stainless under mount might be what I end up with. Cheaper too. Then again, I may just roll the dice on the Whitehaven. I still have a few months to decide. I do know that a stainless under mount is very popular today and will be for years to come.

I’ve been chatting with some people who’ve owned it for a few years with no issues whatsoever as far as chipping or cracking and for the white a little barkeepers friend cleans it up like new about once a week if you’ve had a lot of sauces etc in there. No water spots on white but probably on the darker ones yeah. I hear you! It seems no sink is without issues entirely. Stainless steel is a popular option for a few reasons!

It will work very well for the heavy Whitehaven, apron front or not. A strap system works great for lighter composite or stainless steel sinks. A Pesimoki is kind overkill for those especially when they're $300.00 and straps are $4.99.

I'm also considering a 12 inch deep stainless under mount to go in my laundry room. Julien Urban Edge Utility Sink 003676 - exterior measurements 31.5 x17.5x12. Should I use the same mount for that. I want a deep sink as we wash the dog there - She's 40 lbs. The sink is more money than I'd like to spend but I couldn't find another one that was 12 inches deep and 30 wide.

I use a Hercules Universal Sink Harness from BB Industries, or a Sink Strap or two from Regent Stone Products.

Correct. Substantially easier. The difference between loosening a couple easily accessed bolts or pulling a dishwasher and unzipping cabinet sides.

No, a strap system is adequate.
