This is definitely not White Dawn, right????

One of my Home Depot purchases has its first bloom and it does not look like White Dawn to me! Could it be Blossomtime? They also stocked Blossomtime (I actually bought one but it promptly died and when I took it out of its pot the roots were shredded and covered with mold) or if anyone has any other ideas as to the ID, I'd love to know what it could be.

Long canes have me guessing that it is a climber, and I would call it moderately thorny since the thorns are big but well spaced out. The leaves are medium green and very healthy even though it's not in ideal circumstances, sitting in a pot on a workbench waiting for a spot in the garden. There is a nice apple and rose fragrance, and the petals are holding up well in the heat.

Any ideas much appreciated. Thanks!!!!

Joey: there's the light pink New Dawn with apple scent. Here's from HMF about pink New Dawn: "Light pink. Moderate, apple fragrance. up to 35 petals. Average diameter 3.5. Arching, climbing. Glossy, dark green foliage."

From HMF on Blossomtime: "Pink, darker reverse. Cameo-pink, reverse spinel-pink. Strong fragrance. 38 to 65 petals. Average diameter 4"."

From the pics. of HMF, Blossomtime has medium-green foliage and more petals than pink New Dawn. So I lean toward Blossomtime.

Thank you!! New Dawn also looks like a good option! Now I'm flipping back and forth between them, because both ND and BT seem to fit the bill :D It will be interesting to see how it develops. I wanted a pale pink climber anyway, and was disappointed when Blossomtime died, so I'm happy with the one that I've got, whatever it is!

The leaves of New Dawn at Chicago Botanical Garden were much larger than yours, plus glossy and dark-green.

You are correct joey. It is definitely not white dawn. However it is new dawn. I've grown over 8 new dawn From many many years and also grow blossom time for quite a few years old so. Blossom time has very full flowers along the lines of aloha. It also has very little scent At certain times.Your description of new dawn sCent Is perfect:1 apple and rose. New dawn's Leaves are not particularly large. When mature new dawn can have a fuller flower almost approaching awakening. My avatar is new dawn. The buds of blossom time are extremely distinctive and some of the prettiest I've ever seen. It is a very distinct contrast between the darker Pink of the exterior and the pale pink of the interior. The contrast becomes lesso as the flower develops and opens. I think lily finch has posted some very pretty pictures of blossom time on The form. I have also but I no longer have those pictures when hacked. I'll see if I can maybe find a post right have posted blossom time bud.

Thank you for the info!! There isn't the contrast between the interior and exterior of the petals that is in Blossomtime's description. New Dawn has also been on my wish list for a while so I don't begrudge it instead of White Dawn. Hopefully it does well in this area!

I meant to amend my above post to add that Blossom time is fragrant! I don't know how I miss that but this year it smells fantastic! However the rose that you have is still New Dawn. 😀

I'd like to try Blossomtime for real someday but I'm pretty happy with New Dawn. It is now planted in the corner of my yard with plenty of space to spread out along the fence. Those thorns are significant enough that I don't want it near a path.

What Vaporvac said - I grew New Dawn for a long time, and it looked exactly like your photo. Watch out for the thorns. The canes are not very flexible, so if you are trying to tie them to something, or get them to lean just a bit, they can spring back and get you!
