A few blooms on a very hot day

Today it is pretty much unbearable to be outside. The temp right now is 99 degrees with a heat index of 112. The weatherman keeps predicting thunderstorms, but we haven't gotten any recently. Here are a few worth photographing.

Dennis Russel, like many of ours this season, has really short scapes. The flowers looked pretty good though.

Fantasy and Dreams is supposed to be a late bloomer, yet it's blooming at what is usually our peak season.

Lemon Fringed Pastel is a delicate beauty.

I guess Mardi Gras Indian is a bouquet bloomer. At this rate, the flowers will be gone soon. The clump was a beautiful sight this morning. It's the brightest flower in the garden.

To the Ritz in a Rickshaw had its ffo today. It's hard to tell by this photo, but it's a reverse bitone.

We thought Gus Townsend X Desire of Nations would be an intro several years ago. Then a vole attacked it--ate right through the roots. We saved it but because of neglect it is taking a long time to get back to where it was and it's not quite there yet. The original clump had some impressive stats--40 inch scape, 4 way branching with 22 buds.

I love Fantasy and Dreams and Gus Townsend X Desire of Nations. So sad to hear what the voles did. How do you stop them?

There's really no stopping them. We moved the clump out of the way. They are hard to kill because they spend most of the their time underground. If Bob sees a hole, he puts the hose down it and floods the hole. One of the natural checks on voles is heavy rain which often drowns the babies. Sparky the cat does his share of catching them too.

I see 2 that I definitely call my favorites in this grouping. Dennis Russel and Mardi Gras Indian. Colors are great and with your heat, they are holding up really well.

Dennis Russel and Fantasy and Dreams really stand out to me in this post. I hope your purple seedling with eventually bounce back. Those original stats were impressive.

It may be hot, but they really look good. I think my favorites are Fantasy and Dreams and Mardi Gras Indian. That last seedling looks nice, especially with those stats.

Lemon Fringed Pastel is a lovely shade of yellow. Like others, I like that showy Mardi Gras Indian. Heat is same here-too hot to be outside.

I noticed today that Dennis Russell was a bit shorter, but it is always shorter and less vigorous than Glowing Quasar.

If it's not hot enough for you outside, you've got Mardi Gra Indian to heat things up. I can just imagine a big clump of that early in the AM......I like the color on Dennis Russell. My Glowing Quasar was nice, but never did produce a lot of scapes. I can only imagine less growth for Dennis Russell.....I also like Lemon Fringed Pastel too. Good form and nice lighter yellow color with an attractive small edge that compliments it perfectly..........Maryl
