45in work station sink

Hello, looking at a work station sink, preferably 45in. Since there is no choice for two sinks and since both DH and myself work at the sink, thought a bigger WS sink is better. Shortlisted Ruvati and Kraus both 45in. Liked Kohler Stages too - but a bit on the high side of the budget. Rachiele seems to have great reviews but pricey too. Any experiences and feedback from the Houzz users here on Ruvati / Kraus? Or any other 42-45in sinks from other brands? We do have a 48in cabinet to host a big sink. Appreciate suggestions and feedback. Thank you!

I have a Franke Orca sink and DD and I can work side by side at it. For a larger sink, Franke has a 2 bowl 40" undermount sink. Pescara PTX160-40 Stainless Steel Kitchen Sink

Granted I do not know all the facts, but it seems odd for the solution to be a huge sink for two people to work at. Will there be a need for two faucets? Two drains? Two bowls? Wider window?

What is meant by, "there is no choice for two sinks"?

Do you each work beside the sink and use the sink, or both work in the sink?

What type of foods do you prepare and cook?

Perhaps scheduling different times at a normal size sink would be a solution?

Have you been to marriage counseling? (just kidding)

Why is there no choice for 2 sinks?

I wish somebody would help me with cooking lol, I have a Ruvati 33” workstation sink with all the bells and whistles. Make sure you have extra space for all of the accessories that you think youre going to use, but dont. Its easy to clean for the most part, I apply ceramic coat to keep it super slippery so everything gets hosed down the disposal. The corners can be a pain. Its a nice sink. Cleans easily and is deep. Where are you putting yours, on an island or along a perimeter counter?

Is this the setup youre doing?

We have had the Stages for 10+ years with 2 faucets (def have 2 facucets to get max utility) - the thing is a workhorse and I cannot imagine not having it

    Kraus makes nice sinks.

I am very pleased with my 33" Kraus single bowl sink. I got the Standart Pro...basic single bowl. Small radius corners that are easy to clean.

I did not want a workstation sink because the ledges look a bit finicky to clean. All those sharp 90 degree corners that I wanted to avoid. And all the accessories needing storage space that I don't have. I wanted maximum bowl size front to back. Ledges rob you of interior bowl size.

Lastly, 45" is a lot of sink. And a lot of counter surface to give up. When I installed the 33" single bowl--the size I needed to fill the counter top cut out--I quickly saw that I could easily live with a 30" single bowl--and maybe smaller even. Plan on 2 faucets for side by side users in a sink that large.

I only wish that I had your problem--making space for a kitchen helper. :-)

@Mark Bischak, Architect, :) lol. No, not been to a counsellor but the home build sure is pushing us towards needing one ;-).

We like the idea of a work station sink. I do prep and DH cleans and most times, we end up working at/by the sink at the same time. I use the sink a lot during prep, I like the idea of being able to wash / cut / drain at the sink and hence the wish for a workstation sink.

Coming to the choice, the layout cannot be changed, this is a home under construction and we cannot change most of the standard things. However, we asked for a bigger cabinet to be able to do the workstation sink and that was agreed by our contractor. Now we need to provide the spec of the sink to the contractor and hence the hunt.

Julien (Home Improvements) also makes nice workstation sinks. They will be more expensive than the Kraus. The pricing through the plumbing showroom my builder used was much better than msrp.

@M Riz, yes, the Ruvati 45in workstation is exactly what we looked up. And yes, we asked for a second faucet and the contractor reluctantly agreed (at an extra cost of course!). This will go in the perimeter, under a wide (~6ft) window.

We also looked up Kraus (photo below) and Kohler prolific (double the price hence not considering).

I saw lot of reviews about scratches and stains - I understand with SS it is expected, but will it still be prominent even with careful usage? The reviews seem to be same across brands - Kohler, Ruvati, Kraus. So much so that I even considered going for a quartz sink (33" is max I found) but our cabinets (48") are already made and this is a one time install so want to choose wise.

We have a grid in the bottom of the sink and have not have any issues over many years. SS sinks are very different depending on the gauge so that may be a factor -

@la_la Girl, agree. Both Ruvati and Kraus seem to be at the same level, SS Gauge and all. Kohler is a bit outside our budget.

I agree, the grid will protect the bottom of the sink, somebody must have tried to get something unstuck from the bottom of ours and theres a mark. Its a sink, youre going to use it and its going to get blemishes. The only person that even cares is me, not one guest has complained to me about it. lol The grid hides it. Mine has all of the accessories, I basically consistently use the dish drain. Not so much with everything else but everyone cooks differently. For me its easier to grab a strainer and put it into the sink instead of grabbing the ruvati wooden colander holder and insert the colander ,then clean and dry the wooden part, havent used the small bowl insert. I tried the cheese grater but honestly its easier to use the hand held one. To each his own. If your choosing your sink based on accessories, more isnt better.

I have the bottom grid, too. Thought I would hate it but ended up liking it. The grid prevents bottom scratching & I don't have side wall scratches` .Sink has been in service for a little over a year.

Stainless can easily be refinished anyway if/ when scratches accumulate. With just sandpaper.

I do not have any experience with work station sinks so pardon my ignorance. Why would one not have a regular-sized sink and have bigger counter space instead? Why would allocating square footage for a work-station sink better than allocating some of that square footage to counter space where you can do all the prep work besides washing veggies/fruits?

For us it’s the utility of the larger sink and 2 faucets (we have a large cutting board that sits over the sink for easy veggie prep so no real counter space lost) - typical nights I can have a large colander draining on the SS shelf while rinsing/preppingveggies on faucet #1 - while DH can pop in on faucet #2 to fill the dog bowl, wash hands, fill water glasses etc - (since it’s oversized I can also easily scrub out a cooler or good size recycle bin, roasting pan etc) For our kitchen, I didn’t want to break up counter run for a prep sink so this just worked better - sinks are very personal tho!

You gain countertop space with a workstation sink. The cuttingboard that's in the sink would have to use up countertop space if it didn't go in the sink.

The part I liked is the 2-tier. I guess it was easy to be able to wash / cut over the sink and slide into the bowl right under. That's how we started looking for work station. I agree the strainer might not be that useful.

So, Ruvati or Kraus? DH wants to go ahead and send the spec to our contractor. Does not want to add any delay from our side and the pressure is building. I am not focused on which one has better add-ons, but from ease of use and maintenance point of view - any recommendations? Prefer function and easy maintenance. Accessories are not the focus.

Also, any feedback on staining? Sometimes HB dumps tea on to the sink and the kids do a lot of paint palette washing too. If I am not behind to rinse away the remnants right away, does it stain a lot? Is one better than the other in this case?

I would explore the possibility to have two separate sinks…in separate locations…with all the uses you describe it is a stretch to think it would be more convenient to have one bigger sink

This is a really important issue…you haven’t said why two sinks are not possible…

I had the kohler workstation for about 10 years. I loved it but was not a fan of the platform. I now have the julien which I really like

Staining is not normally a problem with stainless steel sinks. I wash out paint brushes in my kitchen sink. I have moderately hard water so the sink gets a once a week light scrub down with the liquid Bar Keepers Friend, a thorough rinse and wipe down with microfiber cloth. Coffee & tea are not going to stain the sink.

@btydrvn, not able to make changes to the layout. The plan is standard, this is not a custom build. While the builder supports few changes / modifications, does not agree to a whole lot of changes,

Thank you @bbtrix. Love your space and that is a great functioning sink too :).
