I hired a painter friend in exchange for rent help me paint the trim (going from cream to brown). Trim and siding was originally solid stain but only the trim was badly peeling. It is also rough hewn wood, so sanding would be a nightmare and I didn’t want to completely lose that last ok, so I decided to go with an oil based paint. While doing the upper trim, my friend noted the siding was faded and needed touch up, so hit it with the same oil based paint, over the water-based solid stain siding. It is also the wrong color. Major oops! Options from here:

1. Sand it all down near the power lines on top of a ladder positioned on a hill. Seems unsafe and I will completely lose the rough wood look.
2. Repaint to just below the upper windows in the correct color and stain the rest.
3. Paint just that side of the house.
4. Paint the whole house.

I could continue to use the oil, which lasts longer and provides better protection, but it’s a much bigger job than I was anticipating and much more e pensive, or I could switch to water based. Either way, it’s still more than I was planning on and I really liked the look of the stain, even though I know I need to keep up with it better. Last time it was stained was about 12 years ago.

No judgements in hiring friends/doing work for trade-this is how I roll, and will continue to roll, I just need to figure out what to do next.
