a decorating distraction question

Last year we finally got rid of the bunkbeds in one of our bedrooms at my cottage. Over the past two summers I have found furniture I like through fb market place (but new mattress) to try to get an old fashioned, vintage vibe (like so much of my cottage). But I needed a nightstand. I found one today that really spoke to me and is 25" tall. ($20-yay!) It is oak and for one, I hate oak, but also, I want to add a pop of color for interest. I need ideas for what color to use. I will most likely spray paint as my broken elbow prevents much more. (Oh, and the old wall heater has to stay for now. I will try to find paint to camoflauge it, but can't remove it just yet.)

Here is the nightstand: (it could move a few more inches over to the right but not much more. There is a piece of shelving to the right on the floor right now which I kept out of the photo.)

(ETA, the nightstand is level. I'm a little off. )

If mice during the winter weren't a problem, I would change the glass to chicken wire and shamelessly steal SueB's wallpaper in back. But no can do.

Here is more of the room (remember, small cottage.) The bed is from the 30's.

The color isn't photgraphing well, but it is that rain green with hits of grey.

the chair is a bit of a necessity and usually has an old stuffed bear on it.

The embroidered picture has sentimental value and stays.

The dresser is across from the bed.

The dresser and blue lamp stay, as do the curtains, for now. The white lamp needs a new shade desperately. I could live without the white lamp, but it does offer a clean look.

The bedspread stays and is more slate than appears

Color ideas for the nightstand?

Thanks!

No, but I think I have that same dresser, and matching nightstand and vanity. I’m not sure if the bed I have, somewhere, is the same set but probably so.

Great buy! No color is coming to me but I think a lighter color with a light print runner next to the bed. Would make a great and cheerful reading spot.

WOW! I really like the nightstand! It has a lot of style going on with the curvy legs. 😊

I'd keep it simple...slate blue or the same white as the bedspread.

A darker version of the wall color. Just a little darker, and a white band around the top.

My instinct would be white, or a blue that is similar to the drapery background.

Is there any yellow/gold in the drapery fabric? If so, maybe something like this? If not, disregard:

Love the blue. Here is a close up of the drapes:

I know, it is dated, but so is the furniture (intentionally so.) Plus, I've added blackout lining to these so I am invested in them (they came from a room in a house of ours circa 2001 or so. But they are really well made.)

That deep blue is definitely in them.

Super cute table! (btw not oak so it will be easier to paint and the grain won't show) I want to see a hit of saturation, maybe pull part of the duck's green for the table. It looks like that may be part of the background color in your drapes, too. Then a decorative pillow or two for the bed. The spread slate color reads as a neutral so I think you can do it.

I love antiques! My whole house is "dated" LOL!! I like Pal's suggestion, a deeper green.

Agree on some kind of blue and that the wood is not oak so maybe you hate oak and some other kind of wood.

Maybe just the top is oak?

The sides feel much lighter than the top. maybe panelling?

Could you have chicken wire AND glass????

Okay - top's oak, the rest is something else.

Yes the top is oak - hard to tell what the rest is. But seeing that shine on the top makes me wonder who is going to do a scuff sanding for you since you can't sand! Hate to see you go to the trouble of painting - even spray - and have it not adhere well.

I love the slate blue one that jinx posted and I hope some of you will post some actual paint colors because I am in a similar predicament although with a different application and I'm going to look at paint chips tomorrow. Seeing that really helped a lot as I was leaning towards a much different blue.

I wish I knew that blue color, I just grabbed both examples off a google search of painted nightstands.

Hopefully someone knows something similar. I really stink at choosing paint colors.

I just realized ....that slate blue nightstand Jinx posted...I OWN that! I have it stored up in my husbands wood shop. I should paint mine black! LOVE IT! 🥰

Love the room, love the nightstand, love the blue that Jinx posted, and also love Pal's suggestion to go a little darker than the wall color. This is all just so charming!

Maybe instead of glass or chicken wire, shirr some fabric ...

Jojo, I missed where you broke you elbow. Are you okay?

I made bedroom curtains with that same material! Bought my first sewing machine and the first thing I did was make curtains. :)

Oak, I’m fine . its not that painful—really more of a nuisance than anything else . Thanks for asking .

Love the blues.. and what a charming room!

(Glad you are doing well!! Not to be debbie downer, but watch for a change in your hand strength. I nailed my elbow on the corner of a table and ended up nicking my nerve and displacing it. I lost about 75% muscle functionality in a month. It was a fast decline and requiring surgery to release the nerve).

Will it be the only painted piece in the room? I don't think that will work over all for your "old fashioned, vintage vibe". It will look this century/decade while the rest looks vintage. It's light wood tone is an issue as is. Maybe you need to strip and stain it darker to work with what you have.

I would probably paint it white for simplicity. If you prefer color I would paint it the palest blue or green you can find. A dark, rich color might suck the light out of that space next to the bed. Also , pulling out a color from the curtains for this piece is a standard decorating move that contradicts the the casually collected style you already have going on— and is already very successful.

Mines done! I used Behr Marque and a 1" brush, one coat. I'll let it sit overnight before I bring it down out of the shop. It will sit next to another painted piece, a caned barrel chair AND ottoman, also painted black. "IF" I was feeling ambitious, I have a slab of black granite and I'd make a new top for it. Maybe a weekend project...🤔....it sounds like a lot of work....I'm just going to cover it with a lamp, a box...decor junk...

@jojoco...Thank you! Yes...the new house has a huge shop above the garage w/ radiant heat flooring in the Winter. It has high vaulted ceilings with windows & a cool breeze in the Summer. The kittens kept me company playing in cardboard boxes.

I've been looking for an excuse to use this color, and your nightstand provided it. It's available as a Glidden spray paint from HD.
