lamp shade questions

I had a specific lamp in mind for my recently refinished nightstand. I wanted a bunny but not a cutesy one. Something simple but elegant. After looking around in every corner of the internet, I found what I hope is the perfect lamp. It is crackle glaze with a cool brass arm. Only issue is that it doesn't come with a shade. The table is 20 inches across and the lamp base is 9.5". Even if it looks dreadful where I plan to put it, I will keep it anyway because, A) I love it. and B) I'm pretty sure it is a no return since it is Ebay.

Oh, and I've already bought it so ixnay on the atehay comments.

Here's the lamp:

Table:

As I look at this, I do wonder if it will look like the bottom is a cage, but it will likely be filled with throw blankets or books. I also want some sort of plate? box? bowl next to it.

No atehay here! I love it. I'm not very good at lampshades, though, so probably I'm no help there. Were it me, I'd probably try something wicker or woven, or maybe black, to see if it works. Is there another color in the room that you're using as an accent that could be used in the lamp shade?

I had a custom lampshade made here: Fenchel Shades They may be able to help you figure out what size and type shade would work based on the dimensions of the lamp. A standard size may work.

That is a nice bunny lamp and a great find :)

It's cute! Not too cutesy but cute. Wish you hadn't made me think of the rabbit hutch though. :)

Would a blue and white striped fabric shade be too corny? I'm pretty bad with shades.

Consider rewiring if it's all all suspicious. Should be easy.

I would get an oval tapered shade, white. You want people do be able to read and have a shade that does not cast weird shadows.

Something like this, I don't know the size you need.

Hmm, what about a pretty blue shade?

    A print?

    A solid?

    Or green?

I can see a pretty floral as well. The bunny might be more at home with that

P.S. How could anyone hate a cute little bunny rabbit?

That is adorable! I totally love it. If it were me, I would wait until the lamp arrived and then head to a lamp store to try different shapes and sizes. Then go on a search.

Somewhere i heard, when picking out a lamp shade it should minic the base, so perhaps an oval would work for your darling bunny …… all my bunnies are in the garden eating my flowers.

Nothing says ”cottage” like a pleated lamp shade

Lots of sources, this one is at https://www.wilder-home.com/products/pleated-lampshade-varieties?variant=40938321543363

A gingham pleated lamp shade in a muted color would be a charming touch.

I’m a pleated shade fanatic, but can’t stand the kind with the metal piece showing on top. I’d look for one without that.

One of my fav lamps; my DD got it for me:

A while back, I came across these styles. I’ll try to find the sources … iirc, they were custom made (sizes and colors) and pricey. Aren’t they charming?

ETA: Lots of cute scalloped shades: https://www.etsy.com/market/scalloped_lamp_shade?ref=cq_tag_raised_image-2

Will your pretty blue lamp be staying, jojo?

Adore your lamp. I had 2 bunny lamps in DD1s nursery and I wish I had kept them as they were not really designed for a nursery and could have been repurposed.

I just bought a custom shade for DDs' apt from lampsplus, just a solid chartreuse with a pale taupe trim. I like the quality and it came fast.

I love the bunny lamp. However, I agree with another poster here that you should wait until the lamp arrives prior to actually ordering the lampshade, seeing as how it is ceramic and carriers are not always gentle with package deliveries.

Soooooooooooooooooooo cute! I love that lamp! I like the blue printed shade and the bunny with the plain short elongated shade Jinx posted. Totally AWESOME! Your giving your guest room little "points-of-interest". A vibe. Good job!

    From The Spruce:

    The Size

This is the tricky part. Some lamps call for shades of unusual sizes, but there are some general rules you can follow.

    • The bottom of the shade should just cover the lamp switch so be sure to measure the harp before buying. The harp will tell you the height from the base of the socket to the top of the shade. You can try using different sized harps while shopping.
    • Generally, the height of the shade should be about 3/4 the height of the base.
    • The bottom of the shade should be wider than the widest part of the base.

Keep in mind that these are guidelines only. Occasionally you'll come across a lamp that will call for an overscale shade or even a smaller-than-usual shade. Assess what will look best in your space and then choose the appropriate one. Trust your eye—if it looks funny don't buy it, but if it looks good even though it doesn't follow the rules, go for it.

Jojoco, I like your bunny and your cupboard.

I tend to prefer lampshades that alloe light to get through. I would, for my personal taste (and I have a Cantonese blue lamp similar to yours), avoid the somber, serious MCM or subdued architectural. I see that the cupboard is dark, the capeting neutral, the walls neutral. I can’t recall what the rest of the room is like. I would want to brighten it up and counter the dark and neutrals with more of the lively playfulness your bunny speaks to.

If it’s not to be a masculine or sombre room, I would go with something cheerful, playful, sweet (not too sweet, not too matchy) like the floral that carolb offered.

    Or the autumnal floral.

Or, if you want more designer,

The first one would let more light pass through the shade.
