Are all the leaves trifoliate?

It looks like some kind of nandina.

Yes trifoliate.

My first thought was also Nandina.

Nandina is killing our beautiful bird species. Please don't grow it, and if you are, please destroy it.

^^^ I've posted on this topic before. The notion that nandina kills off birds is grossly overstated. Like a great many other plants - pretty much any Prunus species, pyracantha, hawthorn, lots of Rosaceae - nandina berries contain cyanide. If consumed in quantity, they can kill off birds, other wildlife.....and humans!

Most birds are smart enough to know that a few berries won't bother them. But cedar waxwings in particular are either dumb enough or so greedy they will strip the plant bare!! And the issue only seems to affect cedar waxwings. No other bird species seems to be overly affected by nandina berries or other cyanide containing fruits, berries or seeds.

This has been very well documented, so no need to overreact and rush out and pull any nandina in your garden. Unless you live where it is considered invasive. And there are even cultivars that rarely ever flower or produce berries so even invasiveness can be a moot point.

That's a pretty broad statement....and without much foundation!! As an extremely versatile broadleaved evergreen shrub, they are most certainly NOT useless! And the tendency for invasiveness is also very regional in nature, as it is with virtually ALL invasive plants. Nandina's invasive properties seem to be limited to a few southeastern states.

btw, I recall you making a comment recently (which I'm sure is now deleted) regarding Euonymus alatus - a much more widespread invasive than nandina - in which you made it out to be no big deal, since they were still being sold just about anywhere. Pretty selective with your invasive choices I see.

And if you are that concerned about the toxicity, then do not plant laurels, apples, pears, cherries apricots, peaches and plums, hawthorns, firethorn, corn, lima beans or any of the 2000+ other common garden plants that contain measurable levels of cyanogenic glycosides.

I just looked up some nandina cultivars and this one seems to be the flowerless dwarf one. It’s not for me, it’s for a resident I’m working with but I really wanted a leucothoe for him but now that we already have the nandina I might as well plant it somewhere else as his area is heavy shade.

So weird how nurseries and garden centers across the country would continue to stock and sell a totally "useless" plant! 🤔

Right? It's almost like people manage to find a "use" for Nandina...so weird!
