Dining room....furniture is country; stairway is colonial, wainscoting is formal.

First, you can't change the tile floor because is will not go under cabinets or appliances. Should an appliance fail, you would have to rip up the tile to remove the appliance.

Changing furniture in the dining room will make a difference.

@elcieg the appliances will be removed and the toe kicks as well for tile install.

For the dining space.. Yes..nothing matches. Plus I've got a buffet from the 1950s in there too! What do you recommend? Go with modern/formal?

Do you recommend I change railing color? How would that work with my current oak floors?

That light fixture has got to go... but with what? That medallion can't be removed from ceiling.

How low budget and diy do you need? On the low end, Change out the turned spindles to straight, linear spindles and paint it all white. Paint the chairs and table legs black. You need a large rug and big piece of art - greatbigcanvas.com has good sales on art. You want the art and rug to coordinate.

Do you suggest the hand rail to be white as well?

Low budget meaning I am not hiring a contractor for anything or doing big jobs like pulling the wainscoting because that means new drywall.

A white hand rail will make it more modern, if that is what you want.
