dated 2012 cottage

Help!!! We need so much help, we have honed ivory travertine flooring . Sienna Bordeaux leather granite countertops and a backsplash that needs to be ripped out.
The floor has yellowed a bit in different light , we have not finished much since we have had 2 houses to renovate . I can’t stand the back splash so we are going to rip it out but what do we put in its place.
The cabinets are all staying as they are beautiful and I really like the granite.
We can’t figure out what colour to paint, what to put on the fire place wall and what colour for furniture.
Should we drywall the cathedral ceiling? What colour to paint the rest of the ceilings? We would also need a colour of wood for the bedrooms.
So much to think about, hope you can help.

Two houses? Do you plan to live in either one of them? Are they rentals or Air B&Bs? Is this furniture staying? Generally, paint is selected to work with fabrics/textiles. How high are your walls? They look to be about 10' to me. Are you considering beams/trusses?

Thank you for your questions. One house was sold and we have been working for the past 4 years on the house we currently live in which we hope will be finished and sold next year. We each have full time jobs so it’s been weekend work.
The plan is to retire at the cottage, and we will finish the cottage when we move up there. The ceilings are 9 feet and 14’ at the ridge. We would like a clean lined cottage with 1 beam . Once we finish the cottage we will build again and rent this cottage out as our retirement income .
. There are 2 bedrooms one on the kitchen side and the other on the opposite side.
The doors are all 7’ solid maple. The bedrooms are drywall but not finished.
We have the trim all ready made just not installed. We were looking to modernize the entire space.
There is a full basement with a walkout with 9’ ceilings along with an additional bedroom.
This table which is in our dining room right now will be coming to the cottage.
All the furniture will go and most of what we currently have in our house will go in the basement other then the table, we won’t be keeping any of it along with the appliances, we were going to put stainless steel in.

The flooring is the star, so I would just drywall the ceiling; no point in installing wood or something else that has to work with the floors. What about something like this for the fireplace? It will coordinate with the floor, but be distinct. I'm not sure what the material is

Hi Decoenthusiaste we would preferred not to have the same stone from the floor on the fire place. We were hoping not to have any more of that colour.
The countertop has a lot of grey and cream in it and also the cabinets have a grey undertone . The floor is more taupe then yellow but who knows , it changes with the day.
I know the countertop is looking golden and green but in real life it isn’t .
    The wall colour that
is recommended for the walls is SW alabaster . But what about the ceiling colour.
I really like the pictures you gave me and wondered if we could do a synthetic sea grass or sisal area rug or should it have some colour and pattern or should the pattern be on the chairs. We could put stools that go under the overhang on the counter but they would have to swivel since these chairs are used all the time.

We had thought that we could run a band of the kitchen cabinet across the top of the fire place and on the other side of the wall is the closet the would also be in the same wood. We have looked at having a split face stone in the same material as the floor but it’s not as clean looking. We had thought about putting a light cream back splash and maybe putting a larger format tile on the fireplace.
I have read all of Carla Alton’s discussions on the 2012 wave of travertine floors that now everyone is now seeing what to do with them to modernize them but I couldn’t sort the colours out. We would do a white ceiling , walls doors and trim as it is suppose to take the focus off the floor . We would like an area rug that is very durable since we don’t take our shoes off . We would line 2 chairs also but I’m not sure if the colour of the chairs , rug , or what type of coffee and end tables .
We were going to put 4 slim pot lights on each side in the ceiling. Blinds are going in the window that currently has the brown curtains in and the patio door drapes will go just below the ceiling.

I have been trying to find some up dated Travertine floors with dark cabinets and am not really getting any where., at least not anything modern .
I did read that my floor is timeless and I really do like my floor and to treat it like a wood floor that has variation in it.
I did find a few pictures that had cream or ivory coloured sofas and some had different coloured chairs . My floor has a lot of cream in it and I thought maybe this would be the way to go for a sofa to get rid of all the browns I have in the room other then the cabinets. Change the drapes on the patio doors to cream.
Paint the ceilings that we currently have a white , prime all the doors so that they are not yellow brown, put the pot lights in over the peninsula , change the fabric on the 3 stools and then see how that looks. I think just changing the backsplash will make a big difference
I am going to take a sample of the countertop and the cabinet and the floor to go look for a cream subway tile that would work. I’m hoping I can get some opinions , all opinions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

With that type of ceiling you could paint it the same color as the walls. SW Alabaster would be perfect for this. You're right, changing the backsplash will make a big difference and you should keep it simple with that countertop.

Kandrewspa, thank you I’ll be going there this weekend and will buy a sample pot. I was also looking at SW Anaesthetic white also which looks like it has a grey undertone, I thought I saw a hint of yellow in the alabaster but you guys know better then me.

Ripping out the backsplash is a very big job so we wondered if we could paint it instead of removing it. What do you think?

Hi there, moving along abit at the cottage, we primed the backsplash and wow what an instant refresh, it’s really calmed everything down . Now all the lights need to be changed , I will take pictures once they are changed to a 4000k, you can see on the pictures where there are no lights by the window how yellow the under mount lights currently are , it’s amazing how distinct the colour change is.
We have decided also to redo the lighting in the kitchen ceiling, we will take all the lights out and place them properly. I’m not sure if we should put pendents above the peninsula and one over the sink or should we stay with pot lights .
If we do pendents should we do 2 or 3, the peninsula is 86” long.
If we paint the walls and ceiling in SW Alabaster should we also paint the doors and trim in the same colour just a different finish?
I would really like to change the brown curtains now , is there a colour I would be safe with , could I do a light grey or stay with a ivory or cream. I’m so afraid I’ll get something with yellow in it and the window with the patio doors in 10’ so it’s pretty big.
    Greatly appreciate your input.
    Thank you
