Bathroom junction box

Hi,

We just recently renovated our bathroom and the contractor could not cover the junction box with drywall due to building code. It currently has an access cover, right above the mirror. It's a big eye sore so do we 1) move the LED mirror up or 2)install wall sconce? We don't need more lighting in the bathroom so wall sconce will be decorative. Currently the LED mirror is at an ideal height so if we move it up, it may look off. Any suggestions? Note the mirror is 60 inches so wall sconce would need to be fairly long. Thank you!

What is on the other side of the bathroom vanity wall? Possibly the J-box could be turned and accessed from the other side. Like inside a closet, hopefully?

Put a sconce over it please.

Thank you for your comments but unfortunately it's not possible to move the junction box to the other side of the wall.

The contractor can't drywall over it, but could you? I don't know anything about electrical. It's just a question.

Can the source to that sconce be killed closer to the source without affecting other lighting or outlets?

If the wiring comes from below it's possible the j box could be moved down behind the mirror.

Or possibly it could be terminated at the outlet below. I would have an electrician look at it.

Sconce - I have sconces in my bathroom that never are used - they wouldn't even provide appropriate lighting because they are heavily shaded. I think the only time they are turned on is when one of my close friends comes over and turns them on as a semi-joke in the powder room for "atmosphere.

FWIW your bathroom as currently existing is pretty bland aesthetically so a gorgeous interesting sconce would do more than disguise the junction box but also be a pleasing aesthetic element.

    I agree with Palimpsest.

If an electrician says no to all of those ideas, then I think getting a taller mirror would be your next best option. Sorry if it would be replacing a brand new mirror-- is there any chance you can return or sell the current one?

IDK how you would even find a sconce wide enough to fill that space and not look awkwardly small. I can't find any sconces longer than 40" -- and that would look weird centered over a 60" mirror. Also it would need to be set so low, so that could look odd as well.

If nothing else, I would put a 1x6 (or strip of MDF) the length of the mirror over it. Spacers behind the board to clear the JBox cover. Like a shallow valance. Could even use some LED strip lighting...mood lighting, night light behind the board since the electrical supply is right there. Paint it either the wall color or trim color or cover it with metal.

Why can’t it be moved? Drop it so it’s behind the mirror since you say it can’t be flipped.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I think we will be installing a wall sconce to hide the junction box cover.
