If I really like or want a plant, I give it 3 tries (first purchase, no more than 2 replacements). Paul’s Glory has finally grown for me on the third try after first try was eaten, 2nd succumbed to location stress, and final growing well in a pot. Others get 1 try only if not beautiful or quite pricey.

Same....usually 3 tries. Some only get 2 then out they go....

for me Praying Hands is one and done..I still have some of it..but if it goes that's it..

other than Praying Hands in my opinion my hosta look nice with very little effort..

There are some hosta that I have given several tries, Tokudamqa Aureonebulosa--got 2 last year and one is barlely surviving and it's in sick bay Others, I give up after 1 try Praying Hands. It all depends on how much I like it. I bought 3 Great Expectations last year from a local nursery for a low price and put them in a pot--they've done much better than in the ground. Now that I have to mail order everything, I tend to be more selective. I have bought a few "special hostas" from Bob Solberg since I've met him at a local meeting where he spoke and brought lots of plants, His "special, new hostas" have grown well for me--so of course this year I ordered more. Ruby Earrrings and Peach Brandy were splurges but I have every hope that they will survive and do well. When I used to go to nurseries nearby and saw something different, into the wagon it went. Now that's not an option. I am sure if I could visit LOG, lots of "Special Hostas" would jump into my wagon/cart. Nothing beats seeing plants in person. UTOG, next time I divide my Paul's Glory, I can send you a bunch.

No. I tried Cherry Berry and it died. I bought another and it died too. That’s it for me.

Lots of other hostas in the sea, and many grow like weeds. Cherry Berry doesn’t like me apparently. I think Junes are beautiful, but they don’t like growing at my new house. Oh well. I’m moving on.

I'm on my third Victory and second Empress Wu. Don't know why they seem to be difficult but will keep trying when I can get them at a decent price. Praying Hands will not get another chance. I have had Sheila Macqueen three times and finally got a decent start.

I babied LS Paisley Print for two years…..no luck, so it’s out. Great Expectation didn’t come back the year after planted so I gave up on that. Whirlwind and Colored Hulk have dwindled to nothing, not worth saving. I have noticed decreased size in some this year….. Dream Queen. Liberty and Night Before Christmas are struggling as well. I am not sure what it is, I have not been able to be as attentive to the garden this year……between my limitations and Bert’s injured forefinger (he’ll never get full movement back) mulching did not get done so plants suffered greatly from the heat, keeping up with watering was hard and now hostas need moving. Also, I have one bed that I think needs to be completely dug out and redone due to root competition. Sigh……..the list never ends!

Of the 105 hostas that Rawson lists as hard or difficult to grow, I've had 37. Six of them I no longer have (Blue Beard.Brim Cup, Cherry Berry, Flame Stitch, Jack of Diamonds and Nougat.) Fifteen of the others I raise in pots and the rest are in ground plants. If a plant is struggling I pot it and maybe in a year or so I'll try it in another spot.

I think I tried close to dozen on difficult to grow list, did lost some and some made it.

Cherry berry was not one of them. Some of it was my neglect so I feel responsible to give another go to some.

Sagae is my problem hosta. I am on number 3. It does not die just does not grow...

So is Eskimo pie.

Great Expectations did transplant but is sulking in premium spot not increasing.

Utog, I had most beautiful LS Live affair innthe pot but the moment I transplant them into ground they dwindle and die.

Miles, I love Ruby earrings, keep posting how it does for you. I will wait for price to come down a bit. I think overall Solberg hostas been good to me. I just got Andy Marlow, hoping it is not too fussy. It is an older hosta but nobody seems growing it...
