Almost certainly Clematis terniflora, as floral suggested. AKA Sweet Autumn Clematis. It is a listed invasive species in MD.

Thanks, seems like that's right. I have the native clematis, Clematis virginiana, that along w/goldenrod has carpeted/smothered my septic drain field and adjacent areas, but its leaves are quite different than the above.

The Clematis virginiana has serrated or toothed leaf margins, otherwise they are close to identical. The two species are equally aggressive.

But one is a native plant and one is a non-native or 'exotic' invasive species.

What happened to Jay's coyote? I was trying to decipher what that meant or how it might be pertinent to the matter at hand. The two clematis species here are so closely related I would think they would readily hybridize making ID of the offspring more challenging.

It was, except for the leaves they are close to identical. The difference in the leaves is how you can tell them apart.

I noticed one common name for C terniflora appears to be ’Yam-leaved Virgins Bower’ which is telling.
