Replacement wood windows cut down on installation

Hi - we are replacing all of our existing vinyl windows with single hung wood windows (brick to brick). Our house is a 1912 Edwardian and the brick openings are not even. Wr are very happy with the windows themselves. However, on installation, the installers roughly sawed off the sides of several windows to make them fit into the opening. Caulking has not happened yet. Is this a typical approach in these circumstances? I know that the caulking will cover the rough edge but the actual saw edge is so uneven and rough. It seems like more of the frame was removed than was necessary. But also aware that installing new windows into old uneven openings is not easy. Would appreciate any insights.
