what small animal eats hoya plants?

I lost my Hoya heuschkeliana variegated, hoya obovata variegated and hoya kentiana variegated today. they are outside for the summer. I noticed that Hoya h's leaf got eaten a couple days ago. so I put all of them inside a home made chicken wire box (the mesh size is around 1/2 inch) but today I just found that the plants are all gone. There are other plants in the chicken wire box too but only Hoya are all gone. The box has no bottom and there are gaps between the side wall and ground so I think it is some small animal (since if it is big animal the box should be moved but it is not) We have chipmunk in the yard but I thought chipmunk does not eat vegetables?

Chipmunks and squirrels have been the culprit when I find some plants chewed or eaten. Even caterpillars decimated one of my plants before seemingly in an instant. Rabbits, mice and slugs too. The deer are the worst though! I keep some of my problem plants on my porch to deter them. I also keep a sacrificial plant up front and center in case they get bold enough.

Deer (i think) have eaten my cebu before! They are poisonous I thought! I saw a video from planterina (I just love her, such a beautiful soul) she had a cebu eaten as well recently. It seems to happen overnight sometimes and sometimes I have seen the culprit with my eyes in broad daylight. Cheeky little things they are. I dont know if they eat them or they just chew on them..destroying an entire plant...just in thin air no evidence. There is alot of wildlife around where I live. Its just something that happens to us all around here. Alot of my neighbors keep netting all around their plants. I dont like the look and would rather take my chances. I do have flood lights. It scares some wildlife away. Sorry for the rambling. It just makes me so mad.

Did you find any poo or other evidence?? Caterpillars love hoyas they r in milkweed fam. Sometimes its hard to know...Unless you see them do it or find evidence. So sorry it happened to you. Its the worst! Especially when it happens to a beloved or expensive plant, so devastating. If you ever find one chewed use a bit of diatomaceous earth. If its an insect they will die when they come in contact with it. Only when dry though. It may save the rest of the plant from being eaten...or a thin screen if u have any laying around. I have used spikes around certain plants and that works for some small animals. As a gardener it always seems we r going to battle with something in one form or another.

Probably chipmunk then. i see chimunks runn around happily in my yard. its never occurred to me that they would eat plants. i have caterpillars damages on other plants but there are always damaged leaves left. this time nothing left in the pots or around the pots.seems they enjoyed the meal very much. also lost a couple japanese maples to squirrels, they like to dig in the pot and expose the roots. all my potted japanese maples have a protected mesh in the pots now. i might just build a closed grow box with the chick wire meth to protect some of the valued plants. it is frustrating for sure and this year is the worst damage wise. is it because of yhe drier summer that they have to eat plants for water?

My box turtle has taken bites of my hoya when within her reach. I thought it would be a problem but no effects at all. Maybe a band of turtles invaded the enclosure!

We are in the worst drought around these parts ever recorded. Those little critters are eating anything with moisture. Those leaves too. NO puddles, no pond, and no lakes here.

Slugs. I found them in my GH too. They're like little recycling machines. If you find any shiny slime trails in the morning, it's slugs.

Mike is right though, it's been months since we had rain around here too. The drought has killed a lot of trees and other plants. The animals are looking for whatever moisture the can find. Can't wait to finally get some rain, but when it does it will just run right off since the ground is like concrete. We need several days of a light gentle rain to allow everything to soak in. I have a creek that runs through the back of my property, and it has been completely dry for several weeks now. That has never happened before.
