Getting ready for winter and some shelving ideas

As the title says, I'm starting to prepare my sun room to accept my plants for winter soon. I've already begun a spraying regime in order to eliminate any buggys which might have moved in while they were outside. I'll spray with a combination of neem oil, dish soap (Dawn) and water every 4-5 days now for a least a the next several weeks.

I also purchased two sets of shelves, which I combined to make three sets (magic!) that should accommodate the hanging plants, tall trellis's, and rambling plants. How I did it as shown in the video (who ever said a good magician doesn't show his tricks!). https://youtu.be/O9K2pZ7FMCg

Hopefully I can fit everything.

If any of you have some shelving trips, please post them as I'm sure we could all use the ideas, I know I certainly can.

enjoy....

Wow what a great idea to link those metro shelves like that! I've never thought of it!

I also like how you put some of the top shelves way higher than the middle so you can use them for hanging plants. Very smart!

Your windows are so great. I bet they let in tons of wonderful light for your plant babies! I wish I had more window space for more shelves! I'm always trying to maximize what I do have. You have done well!

Kyra, I was trying to figure out how to make the arrangement longer than just two single shelves next to each other, and came up with this. I need to place the lights on top tomorrow, and begin getting everything ready because when it does start to cool off it does so quickly around here. I will also put a drop cloth under the entire arrangement to catch any drips which I will invariable make! I also need to put a plastic drop cloth on the left side too since my room heater is located there and I don't want the plants in the air stream the entire time it's on.

The windows face south western, so they do tend to get a lot of exposure, but since the sun's angle is so shallow they require supplemental light. What I do with the windows on the side of the room, is to place curtain rods in them and I can hang my air plants and orchids on them as well. They get south eastern light so for them the windows alone are sufficient.

The bigger plants like the dracaenas etc in the corners. I try to make everything fit, but for some strange reason the rooms get smaller each year!

Great video and setup Bill. Would love to see a pic when all the plants are in. I bet it will look beautiful.

OH yeah, I want to see an "after" video too!

Ok, in a few weeks. Once the nights begin to drop in temperature they get hauled in. I will definitely post some pics and a video.

    Me too!
I hear your pain Bill. I also just sprayed all of mine with a systemic. Only my houseplants. Don’t like using this stuff on outside plants for fear of harming bees.
    I have lots of those.
I did find one I have not treated by accident all summer with mealy.
The lights are ready to go with glass shelves too. I also use mirrors on wells to capture lots of sunlight ! The sun at that angle reflects all over.
I like the drop cloth ideas. I’ll be doing that in my 4 seasons porch this time which will also provide humidity.
Boy, I can’t believe how fast summer went and how fast the cold nights will be here.
This year I won’t leave any of mine out when temps drop below 55 at night or if it takes forever to warm up which will be in a couple of weeks
I can’t wait to see your set ups.

Mike, what systemic did you use that's a spray?

Wow Mike! Very impressive collection. They look really healthy. Best of luck with them.

Now I'm gonna go buy the spray myself.

    Thanks again....

    Tiki, thank you)

Would you believe I actually enjoy seeing them on my shelves in my house again?

I am hoping I can actually enjoy the fragrance of a few now rather than pass them up and let them smell outside where I never notice..

They are all in a sunny south facing window which should be enough light until about November then the lights will be turned on.

Will do. I will take pics as soon as I have them rearranged, I am seeing 40's for night time lows starting tomorrow then low 50's. Not that it's too cold, but for our area too cold too LONG. It will stay that cold for hours putting all my tropical s at risk of rot. a.d hypothermia.

    Thank you))

What are you feeding these monsters? They are huge! That sunrise is so big!

Here are the shelves just about full. I've brought pretty much everything inside now. They were all sprayed liberally with Neem Oil and detergent, as well as Bonide systemic sprinkled in the soil medium. Hopefully this will keep the mealies away for a few months. Now the only problem is supplying enough humidity. It's typically in the very low 30% range here during winter, if not lower on occasion. They get misted at least once a day, and will be watered on a weekly basis now. Towards the mid winter range, water will be decreased still more.

Here's a video of the shelves with 95% of the plants on them.

@Bill M. Great job!! Looks beautiful like a nursery!!

Wow Bill. that room has such amazing light! I am so envious. Thank you for the video. I can watch it a few times and pause if I want!

Thanks Kyra. It faces pretty much south, so I get some morning light as well as evening light too. When I moved out here from NY, one of the requisites in looking for a house was it had to face south! Having this room on it was an added bonus. I made an offer on it the same day I saw it. After a bidding war, I prevailed, and now it's my relaxing room during the winter. The only problem is it opens into the den, where the TV is located, so if someone is watching the TV (which seems to be always) then it's not so quiet in the room.

    Bill, beautiful))

What do you need a greenhouse for? That place is perfect. I shut mine off for the winter since electric rates are going up 65 percent. Now it's no longer affordable to hobby outside.

    I noticed some orchids too.

    I hope all is well)

It's a good place for overwintering, but by March they are feeling the pressure of being inside. Towards the end of April they'll be brought outside again, placed in the GH, given oodles of light and start the process all over again. It's easier to take care of them in the GH too, since they can be sprayed with a hose or insecticide without worry.
