Update and Revive

I’m helping my sister update the color scheme for her exterior. Looking at updating the color scheme with the existing pinkish brick. She MAY be open to changing the brick color, if it’s an easy fix; so all over new color schemes are welcome as well! She was wanting to find out if TREX could be used to update the porch floor? It’s starting to crumble. She’s a retiree, so not a lot of cash to work with. Your ideas are MUCH appreciated!!

Get a carpenter's opinion about replacing the porch floor with trex. It should be doable and maybe have the column wrapped, also. Is she willing to paint the siding? A soft gray/green would be nice with the brick. I would also paint the trim & garage door to match. Get an electrician to fix the lamp pole and paint it black. If the half-moon grilles can be removed from the garage door windows do that, also. Remove the shutters and check the brick underneath for discoloration. Brick may need to be cleaned. A more appropriate door for the house style would be nice also.

If she wants to keep the siding white have a cleaned. Paint the shutters and door (including storm door door) black

Remove all shutters. Paint front door and all the siding and garage doors charcoal that matches the roof. This will go a long way to balancing out the pink brick and make it an asset, not a negative feature.

As budget allows, she might consider extending her walkway where the interior garden is for friendly front gathering spot with neighbords and friends. Lots of people are doing this post pandemic. Create an extended garden bed and relocated plantings from existing interior garden bed.

Are they Roman bricks? I can’t get a closer look, but if they are, please don’t paint or limewash over them. They’re a desirable feature.

Lots of potential here, very nice house!

    I agree with removing shutters.

nice house! Def don't paint the brick - and I agree with removing the shutters. Changing the front door(!) and building a nice wood column around the fussy iron one would go a long way in modernizing the front façade -

I would also update/enlarge the lights by the front door and either side of the garage, you could have the post light updated to match those

Clean brick don't paint it after removing shutters. Repair porch and build column ( with stone look base?) around the iron work column, Paint door Black or a Fun dark color. Keep siding white but consider charcoal trim. Don't waste retirement funds on lots of color changes when the original is in good shape.

DO NOT PAINT the brick for sure IMO the those too large gables are the issue so making them blend wih the brick is IMO the best choice Please get anew front door this is not a Victorian house on any level. This is usually one of my faves with brick but maybe even darker woudlbe better same grayed green just darker . I hate ie when someone messes with a nice MCM type ranch by adding to high and big gables . This is what should have been done

"Crumble" sounds like concrete. Replacing a wood porch with Trex with a solid structure underneath is easy, we did it. Replacing crumbling cement is a different issue.

I find the Trex slightly slippery when wet or snowy.

Crumble could be either concrete or dry rotted wood.

I woudn't paint the brick. There are actually several similar dilemmas on Houzz.

I'd remove the shutters but if you have to keep them, this would be a good color scheme:

I agree with er612. Keep it simple and classic. Beautiful brick. Don’t paint the siding! (I suspect it is vinyl?). No need to do it. I would place larger house numbers on the brick front of the garage under the light fixture so that they can clearly be seen in the dark. Yes to keeping the shutters, but painting them black or navy for sharp contrast. The shutters on the double window were intended for the house designed in this era, even though they don’t “fit” the windows. Keep them. Very pretty! And then….LANDSCAPE!

What do you all think about removing shutters and just painting the wall of siding where the front door and windows are, a deep blue?
