Bathroom update on the cheap

I need to facelift this bathroom without a full brake down of everything. I can replace the faucets, the towel holders, paint the walls, but cannot rip out the cabinet and the marble shell sink. Hi tv Perhaps looking for a retro look. Any ideas

Repace mirrors can be done....not sure If I can fix this up.

Are you selling or fixing up for yourself?

Not selling. It's a third bathroom in the home but with a new granddaughter, we will be using it more. Really can't financially do it over at this time but want to make it more appealing. I love the old tile but the marble sink is so dated. Planning on resurfacing the doors to the cabinet.

Thank you for having the courage to respnd to this mess.....

We have two of those sinks, maybe slightly pinker, coming out at 7 am tomorrow. Who thought those were a good idea? You might want to price out a replacement countertop at a stone place. Remnants can be very reasonable, as are the sinks they buy by the boatload. Changing the vanity would be more problematic, as the floor might not fit the new one.

You might be able to find a remnant countertop that's cheap at a stone yard.

it may just be the lighting or my monitor, but what makes the warm cultured marble look dingy is the vanity looks stark or cool white as do the walls. The tile tub surround appears more warm white or biscuit. so i think a warmer white on the vanity like the tile would blend the colors together more. Maybe just a simple beige glaze or colorwash over the white cabinets would work. If the room has enough natural light, giving the walls a darker color would help. Matching the hue of the accent tile would be nice or pulling a warmer color from the artwork. Getting new light fixtures would be a good update. Do you really need light over the side wall mirror? What if you replaced the side mirror with open shelf and decor? Changing Light fixtures and mirror will probably call for wall retexturing and paint.

Even easier updates could be just a new color scheme with shower curtain and towels.

Thanks for info. You could paint the walls the same color blue as the tile trim or paint them a lighter, similar blue. The countertop looks in great shape. With a new baby, it will be quick and easy to keep clean. If it needs polishing, try Gel Gloss or a new can of paste car wax.

Why can't you replace the counter & sinks? Budget?

Replacing the counter & sinks are the quickest, surest way to update.

Minimal update, IMO: Replace counter, sinks, faucet, lights, vanity pulls.

I would keep the towel bar & any other bits that match. It is a classic design, probably better quality than budget replacements would be and I happen to like that design. Also, no point in putting more holes in the tile in order to mount new ones. The other thing in favor of keeping is that although that design was ubiquitous at one time, it isn't anymore.

Nothing stopping you from putting a shower curtain across the tub for a splash of color.

I like the mirror/ medicine cabinet that you have on the long wall. I might remove the one over the peninsula cabinet if I found some artwork that I liked and it needed a place.

Agree with Trace Nietert. I would replace the window blinds.

It wouldn't be very expensive to replace the lighting. And if you had to choose one over the other, I'd sooner replace the lighting instead of the mirror. Or do both if you can swing it, but if it were my bathroom, that lighting would take priority. The mirror is kind of funky, but I honestly like the frame.

    $125 From Lowes:

Or if your budget is super tight, something really simple like this for only $26 (they also have longer ones if this one is too short). Go for brushed nickel, the chrome ones can sometimes look cheap.

Thank you everyone. I think it’s definitely the white stark cabinet that is making the sink and countertop look so dingy. I will go to the hardware store tomorrow to see how it can be glazed. I will replace the lights and probably get a couple new towel racks. The current ones really look cheap…..and they were.
Houzz is so great, the design dilemma is so helpful.

Glazing the cabinet will only make it look dirty please do not do that.

QUESTION: In your picture, the bath surround looks pinkish on my screen. Is it pink or beige ?

You could embrace the sink and go full-on beachy/coastal. Take down the mirrors. Replace with a capiz shell mirror (for example) and get a light fixture with a nautical feel to it. I'd even find some great wallpaper with a fish or ocean design. Paint the cabinets to a color that works with the wallpaper. Some ideas:

I'm showing a paint colour for your vanity (you can paint melamine if t's in good condition).

    I suggest the following:

    - black sconces

    - black cabinet pulls

    - black towel racks etc.

    - bamboo roman shade

    - white vanity accessories

    - white towels my 1st choice but could be turquoise as an accent

(to match the stripe in the bath surround)

    - chrome more modern style faucet

It sounds like it's complicated for you to replace the mirrors so I'm not suggesting anything. I think that one all the updates are done they'll just fit-in.

I'm assuming that the tile surround are in the beige tones. Since I'm only working from pictures, the colours are a concept, they have to match the tones of your countertop and tiles.

Amazon, Home Goods and such places are a good place to shop when on a tight budget.

For me the tile looks like salt and pepper (black specks on white?). it also looks like the mirror has good storage behind it So i would keep it. do you have habitat restores near you? i would check them out for vanity lighting and for a used simple white drop in sink. They may also have a vanity if you are lucky. then go to a hardware store for premade laminate counters that are light and neutral to complement the tile and cabinet. add new faucet and pulls and paint and done.

So the tile is definitely white with black spots. Here are some updated pictures. Thanks everyone

I suspect your mirrors are glued to dry wall and will be expensive to remove. Changing the backsplash and countertop with a remnant piece of stone will make a huge difference. A new shower curtain, Roman shade and new faucet and you have a great new bathroom.

Or embrace the funkiness and go for more blue like the tile strip. It looks like the countertop has some blue in it too.

A new light fixture doesn’t have to be expensive. Look on Wayfair and Overstock. Faucets and other hardware can stay chrome.

I did an inexpensive refresh of a bathroom recently. Removed lightboxes, replaced sinks, faucets, mirrors, and painted.
