Reading pillows

Do you prop yourself up & lean on your side to read? I'm using 3 or 4 pillows, which is comfy but I have to keep rearranging them.

How do you do it? I've been looking for something other than classic reading pillows which I've never been comfortable with. Because the bedroom is in the back of the house and no one sees it, I put a tv tray in front of the nightstand to hold an iPad, book, drink, and sometimes a sandwich.

I don't understand how technology has ignored this problem. ")

You sound like me Fori. One thing I do like about stacked pillows is that I put the softest pillow on top so my elbow can sink just a bit, medium pillow in the middle and firm on the bottom.

There's a window behind the headboard which is a perfect size for bed placement. Today while reading I glanced out the window and thought I saw a giant Dove like bird sitting in the trees at the creek. Got the binoculars and it was clouds. Then I started singing Judy Collins. :)

Ha, Fori, I know that situation all too well.

I read in bed, lying on my back with two, pillows under my head. One is a memory foam pillow, so it doesnt squish too much. Then I put a pillow under my knees. I prop the book up with a travel size memory foam pillow on my stomach. Pop on my reading glasses and I am ready to read. Its a process!

Some people recommend a pregnancy pillow for side sleeping and it might work for reading.

There's got to be something smaller to use. Aren't pregnancy pillows gigantic? I'd burn up. :)

I don't do alot of reading like I used to, but we have an adjustable bed, which is so nice for reading in bed. Actually I do not read much in bed, I prefer my chair in the sunroom, and an ottoman : )

I bet a nursing pillow (like a Boppy) would be good for reading--for the arm and book support part anyway, perhaps used in conjunction with an adult type of chair.

I use a three pillow combo: a 24” square Euro in feathers and down, a standard pillow in synthetic down (whatever that is) and a long king pillow in all feathers. Depending on how tired i am I arrange the three for sitting support. My nightstand is big enough to hold everything so I often put my ipad there and watch a movie or read a book on the kindle app. The success of the three pillow thing depends 100% on thoroughly fluffing each pillow in the morning as I make the bed. I change the pillowcases every few days and the pillows are extra fluffed at those times.

@Oakley, how’s your DH? And how are you?

I use a stack of pillows that I shift around.

I have 2 down pillows, which I love because they mold to my body. I have a firmer polyfill pillow behind them for support.

I've actually been thinking about getting or making one of those backrest pillows with the arms. We used to have them when I was a kid.

Have you seen these? Kind of tempting...

I do not do this, but a pregnancy pillow would probably work great if you want a comfy way to lay on your side. I am obviously not pregnant any more and never will be again, but I still love my pregnancy pillow!

I have a "sculptable" pillow made of torn up foam, and it's the absolute best. (I have upper back/neck pain so I've tried so many types.) I can plump it up for reading, smash it down for sleeping, and it actually holds its shape while still being soft. You can add/remove filler to adjust to the perfect size, or when it loses loft after a few years. I've had mine for nearly two years and I haven't had to add any filler yet, this thing is going to last me a long time.

Although I do not do much reading in bed. I too love the COOP pillow, it is wonderful. When my last pillow was needing to be replaced I started the hunt, as I get older my neck is difficult to please. This was the 6th pillow I tried, I think it was recommended by Consumer Reports. It has been perfect, bought another for our desert place. So nice to be able to customize the fill.

Jill, do you have a link for the type of coop pillow you bought? It was my neck which made me do a pillow search last year. I couldn't move it without excruciating pain.

This is the pillow I ordered, two of them. I call them the pillows from he!! As usual I didn't read the instructions about customizing them. They came flat as a pancake and so heavy I could hardly lift them. Put them under my head and five minutes later they were on the floor.

Then I read you have to unzip the pillow and arrange the filling accordingly. I had to take out a lot of filling, it was packed. I need a pillow where my head will softly sink into while not going flat and smashing my ear. lol

No matter how much adjustment I did where it was comfy, they became hard as a rock again and they would end up shaped like a hard roll and I didn't want to spend the time adjusting the pillow before I used it.

These cheap pillows I bought a couple of years ago have been the best pillows I've had, until they break up into chunks inside. But the price is low and I can replace them every year or so, and not feel bad.

I have an upholstered headboard and that plus a firm euro pillow and my regular standard pillow makes for a nice angled backrest for reading.

I read sitting up in bed. I put one pillow in the small of my back and then turn the other pillow on its side for the top of my back and my head. I sometimes fall asleep when reading and then my head falls off the pillow that is on it;s side and wakes me up.

I purchased Euro pillows from JCP. I wanted support while leaning on the sleigh bed. If hubby is watching something I don't want to see....we even have headphones for the TV watcher....I can read.

Oakley...those pillows you ordered look really nice. Please report back to say if you like them....

@Oakley not all shredded foam pillows are the same. My husband tried two other brands and they were lumpy and hard like you described. And so heavy too!

Regarding the Coop: I have their original. although I love it, the one minor flaw is that it gets warm. Using a cooling pillowcase helped, but is expensive. So I'd recommend their newer version, the "Eden", which has cooling foam in it, and also has a gusseted shape.
