Appreciate all the info. Makes alot of sense to use window shutters when the window trim is only 3 1/2“ which I did to stay within the architectural bounds of my neighborhood.

It’s a fine looking home with its black roof and door. The trim is a great color.

The shutters aren’t bad, but I think the star of your house is the stone and you don’t need the shutters.

Better with them in your case. They work nicely with the roof.

@KL you are right. After 20 years in the house theres always something to be done. My family has all voted for the shutters. I’m the only hold out which is why I came here. if I concur its a done deal. 😊

@littlebug My trim color was inspired by the stonework and the fact that our HOA discourages white windows and trim. Our good fortune was that both the trim and siding colors were stock items.

You’re lucky - you can’t make a mistake. The shutters look very good but in the first photo, without them, I thought the house looked good. Knowing you can remove them at any time and still have a lovely house, you should invest in the shutters. You have a classic, traditional home. Lovely.

If you are the hold out on the family voting, do the shutters - they look good - and pick a different battle you can win.

HU, we've lived in our late-70s house over 20 years too. We had a couple years of deciding whether to stay or move. The discussion included making a list of changes that would have to be made in order to stay. Once we decided to stay, that list was prioritized and other items were added. Each of us separately prioritized. Then we compared our lists and discussed our reasoning. We created another ranking system based on things that would immediately improve quality of life. Then we ranked according to safety. Discussing all these together helped us prioritize the order in which things got done. I wonder if you and yours might find a similar activity helpful. It's so much more fun to make an improvement when everyone has agreed it is a priority.

Another vote for using the black shutters. I'm usually against shutters, but they work here and add some depth to the house. Make sure they are sized correctly for the single windows.

My childhood home had working slatted shutters on a hinge held in place against the house by “shutter dogs”. I guess shutter dogs are a thing of the past?

@marylut yes, in addition to functionality, shutter dogs add wonderful character to stationary shutters. I ordered some from John Wright. Excited to see them up!
