Double play spiera

Does anybody have spiera in thier landscape? I noticed it looks amazing in spring all the way till june then starts going downhill, then ugly for me by this time of the year here in georgia(7b). Ive got about 10 of them so decided to try an experiment. At the end of august I decided to cut one down all the way to the ground just to see what it would do(like a reset cut). Check out the diffence! Although its a little extra work I will probaly do this to all of them next summer but do it earlier to maybe get flowers too. The first pic is what it looked like, 2nd is what it looks like now about 4-5 weeks later from a hard cut to the ground, 3rd pic is what it looked like in late may.

I always prune mine after the flowers are done (although I don't cut them back as hard as you have), and they put out new growth and often flower again, although less prolifically.

spirea .....

next experiment would be to cut one to the ground in spring..and see if it flowers.. and when during the season ..

in general.. these are run it over with the truck plants .. you can barely kill them if you try to prune with the truck .. lol ... so have no fear with trying anything ...

and the only downside is you might lose a bloom cycle ...

i always remembered my own experiments.. no need to ever look it up again.. so keep at it.. its how we all learned.. before the WWW ...

the usual default.. is to prune right after bloom... if you do not want to interrupt the bloom cycle..
