Brass Hardware changing color? M

I'm new to DIY- my husband and I moved into a home from the 1970s and to save money I saw that boiling hinges in baking soda will remove paint from the hardware. Now some of the hinges have some discoloration and I'm not sure if this was from boiling them, the paint, or just happened with time. i want an aged brass look for the hardware but this looks a little too dramatic. is there a way to fix them? are they tarnished- what happened to them?
