Function always comes to my mind. A runner for once a year use, I would not want underfoot the other 364 days of the year. Something w/o the alcohol reference would be more useful for the month. Nothing too light can sit on it as they will be tippy with those layers especially if you use felt--which one needs given all the raw edges.

That is adorable, good luck. I would use fabric as well, prewash fabrics. Looks like something would need hand washing in the future and this will help with keeping it from shrinking or distorting.

Arcy is showing what she doesn't know about raw edge applique table runners. The edges are covered with the decorative stitches so they do not fray. I hand mine from skirt/pants hangers and can put several on one hanger so they take up minimal space. I do think wovens over felt may be more practical.

I'd use that paper backed Heatnbond stuff for appliques - makes it so easy! You just iron it onto the fabric, then cut out, peel off the paper and iron the fabric pieces down before stitching.

Cute and perfect for someone who hosts a Halloween cocktail party! I would personally use the wool blend felt specified - not inexpensive craft felt available at the craft stores for those not aware of wool felt's existence - as I don't enjoy doing fabric applique. I find wool felt a lot more forgiving and easier to work with.

@Bluebell66 - I did not know there was a difference. All I could think of was the cheap felt and it makes my skin crawl just thinking about it lol. Learned something new today!

P.S. With the HeatNBond, I just do a simple running stitch, since the pieces are already bonded to the backing fabric and won't fray or come loose.

I agree with the pre-washed fabric. The pattern is so cute and whimsical. If it was mine I would display it all October.

As for felt, I’ve used 100% wool felt for several projects. The good stuff cuts beautifully and is wonderful to work with. My source is Felt on the Fly on Etsy. Personally, I would applique this to the background, then do embellishing stitches. Needle turning or raw edge applique would also work and probably go faster.

Whatever you do, relax and enjoy the process!

There is a huge difference between the poly felt available in the big box stores and 100% wool felt. This is a small piece of a quilt top I’ve done with wool felt on wholecloth linen. It’s currently out for custom quilting. As you can see, I’m all about the embellishing. Can’t wait to get it back!

When she learned I was planning to sew a throw-size quilt for her, she asked if she could request a smaller Halloween-themed table runner instead. We are the kinds of friends that can make requests.

It will hang from her buffet & hutch shelf above the bottles and mixers.

This is a photo she sent as a jumping off inspiration for her runner. She also said she’d like “less white and more intense and vibrant colors.”
