last modified: 4 years ago

Hello, please help! We have been struggling to choose counters for our existing kitchen.

taj mahal has been recommended. below are pictures of taj mahal with our cabinet door color

(3 pics)

the next 3 pics are our cabinet door with sea pearl quartzite.

the last picture is of our existing kitchen.

keep in mind we still need to paint and there is no backsplash yet.

Any suggestions or help would greatly be appreciated.

Why are you changing the countertops? The 2 new ones look very similar to what you have now. I prefer the sea pearl but I don't believe in tossing for the sake of tossing. Make sure they do not put that 4" backsplash if you do get new tops

Maybe it's my monitor, but your cabinets seem to be off-white, not a white-white. And if that's the case, I don't think Taj Mahal is the best choice. I'd go with something that is creamier or has earth tones blended in.

Hello and thank you for responding.

the current counters are the formica that the builder installed.

we considered doing the full backsplash only if we did the sea pearl but are open to any other sucggestions.

Yes the cabinets are a vanilla color

    definitely not a pure white

I’d go with Taj which has been my dream option for years (just waiting to find a house to buy 😅). The Sea Pearl is also gorgeous but I’ve seen some very different, softer, blended slabs than what you show. I don’t think this slab goes as well with your cabinets. The Taj - I love every color, every version of it but, yes, do consider your cabinets in choosing. It varies so much but I’m sure you’ll find a good match. I can see why someone would say don’t spend the money for a similar look to your Formica. But with a granite or quartzite you’re also getting durability and flexibility in use, in addition to that natural element. I personally would change it.

Kind of hard for me to tell with the first pics because of the pink reflection. It looks off. With the second set of pics the sample looks too creamy for the stone.

    Any suggestions for another countertop?

What color will your new cabinets be?

We just installed Taj Mahal counters with true white cabinets, and I agonized over whether the Taj would look good with my very white cabinets--which came from the factory in that finish. Our Taj Mahal slab is a greige color with some white and gold/green veins but doesn't have that warm beige look that some slabs have. Our slab would not look good with a off-white that had yellow undertones but would look good with an off-white with warmer grayish (not blue) undertones. I agree with others that your cabinet door seems to have a yellowish undertone from the pictures-especially in the picture with the sea pearl. It could be the lighting though or the gray of the sea pearl. Also, a warning about quartzite. We noticed that slab yards seemed to be labeling many slabs as "sea pearl." I would try to test your slabs if you can prior to making a final decision. We tested some slab samples and they were extremely porous. Also, when we were looking, we saw slabs called Perla Veneta that were definitely creamier than the Taj Mahal we chose. Good luck!

def not the sea pearl. your cabs are too yellowy/creamy, more 'vanilla' than white.

you need a 'warm' stone with no gray undertone. just keep bringing your cab sample and floor sample if you have one. make sure u are in natural light or put a incandescent bulb to it. don't rely on flourescent lighting at stone yard for the real color of your granite, it makes it look bluish.... good luck!

From your pictures I think the Taj slab looks really nice with your cabinet color. I agree the Sea Pearl is too bluish-gray next to your cabinets.

The problem with giving advice based on the pictures provided is the difference in lighting from the pictures and the actual lighting in your kitchen. You have a lovely kitchen already. I understand you wish to have natural stone. Take your cue from the colors in your existing counters. The kitchen lighting makes your cabinets looks very white, not the warm creamy color tha that shows up in your pictures. You say your cabinets are a creamy white. Then steer clear of stone that leans toward the cooler colors.Mabe look for stone that had several shades of white/cream in it (see below)

But stay away from the 4" lip up onto the wall. This gives a much cleaner updated look. Good Luck!

Thank you all! Now we know that sea pearl is not the best option. Here are a few pics from today of Denali another quartzite.

please let me know your thoughts on this one.

    thumbs down, too gray.

    you need a 'warmer' stone.

If I were in your shoes, I'd go with the Taj Mahal. Not only is the color perfect, if you browse this site and read about Taj Mahal, it seems to be the most recommended quartzite for wear, staining, porosity, etc. There are many houzzers who have spent a fortune on quartzites and then have problems with the stone, while Taj seems to be bullet-proof.

I agree with others that the new option looks too gray for your cabinet. I also agree that Taj Mahal is a very durable stone that doesn’t have the staining/porosity issues that many other quartzites have. We eliminated most quartzites because they were too porous. The lighting in the slab warehouses is awful and my Taj Mahal looked grayer under the lights. Once you narrow it down, ask to see the slab(s) outside in natural light.

Taj has a lot of variability. It's a good choice. Just not those slabs that you viewed. Ones that will be perfect for you will be creamier and tanner, with less of the gray cast than the stone that you viewed. If your cabinets look yellow next to the stone, it's the wrong stone. When the cabinets look "white" and just seem to blend with the stone, that's your pick!

Existing kitchen cabinets are driving the bus. Can we see the cabinets and not lots of photos of countertops you don't own?

The Formica that you have looks better than either of those choices, both of which are too cold.

I would replace the sink with a single bowl sink and revisit changing the counters another day.

One more thing I learned the hard way. Because you are getting natural stone, be sure to have the stone supplier hold an extra slab for you in case the fabricator has issues with the stone chipping and needs more stone to finish the job. Natural stone is usually cut into 10 slab lots and colors often change dramatically between lots. If you don't hold an extra sheet, trying to match it is nearly impossible.

It’s so hard to tell from pics, but that slab looks a lot warmer than the others you posted and the best one so far. I think. Does it seem on the warmer side in person? Such a beautiful slab!

Thank you everyone for your input. We currently have two slabs on hold. Yes I definitely think it’s warmer. We are going back tomorrow to view the slabs in natural light. I will post those pictures tomorrow.
