I have a dendrobium biggibum hybrid that is nearly always in bloom in the shower window. Also in that window is a Dendr Green Lantern and a wilsonara Red Rooster that came into flower last week.

In the laundry room is a fading Miltonia. In the kitchen window is a Dendr Thongchai Gold that opened the first blooms a couple of days ago. Also in the kitchen window is a fading Tolumnia.

I'm waiting on a dendrobium kingianum to decide to make flowers or kikis out in the laundry room. Along side it is a phal that just showed it's tiny tiny spike for early spring blooms.

That is great. If you have pics that would even be greater. They sound nice and happy to be in a humid bathroom. If I had a window sill big enough in there and they liked east sun, I would do the same.

I don't note fragrance in anything I have, including a zygo. Maybe I'm partially nose-blind.

Thank you Bill. I'm occasionally the worst plant parent. That ThongChai Gold lay on it's side in the dark for six months with no care during an emotionally laden time last year and probably barely any water for the year before that. I'm just thrilled how resilient it has proven to be. Imagine the flower display in a couple of years when it's actually recovered *lol*.

Just got my first Miltonia Sunset flower of the season. This plant seems happiest in the bathroom, on top of the cabinet, but I took it down for this photo.

Mike, your orchids are amazing. I really like the setup. In fact, all of you have great looking plants.

It's 9 degrees outside now with a heavy wind, and I love sitting here looking at all your photos. They make me warm, and looking forward to spring when I can do some plant shopping again and put the ones I have outside.

I have my brassola nodosa (Queen of the Night) starting to open up again this year. I'll post a picture when all the blooms finally open. Must be over 20 at least. The plant has to be 25+ years old too, maybe even over 30 since had this one forever. This spring I will finally be splitting it, which I'm afraid to do since it had literally wrapped the plastic pot entirely in it's roots, but there's nowhere else for it to go, so hopefully all will go right during the surgery.

I also have a lacanosa starting to open her blooms last night. Both plants are fragrant in the evening so tonight should be fantastic.

I have an oncoming Belleara Pink Panther which is (imo) too small to flower, but it valiantly has zoomed out a spike with three buds on it. Soon..I think.

Bill, smash/burn/crumble the pot and I'm sure all will be well. Though I must admit a 25 year old tangle may be rather difficult to work with. Just start making smart cuts and eventually you'll be there. How many do you expect to make of it?

dbarron - no idea how many. Maybe three or four if I'm lucky. I can't even see the pot it's so shrouded in roots! Once the blooming stops, I'll give it a try. I was also thinking of mounting one or two on a cedar shingle, just to see how that works out as well.

I prefer pots for home. If I had a tropical environment where I could use a hose more, I'd mount. Just doesn't make sense (to me) for a windowsill plant.

I was hoping that you might be able to mentor me just a little because many of your orchids doing so well I have issues with.

Is there any way you could give me detail on a few questions?

Can I see the whole area you have your orchids set up in?

The windows and which ones face south?

Do you water when all of them dry out or do you keep many moist?

Do you have Cymbidiums?

What kind of mix do you use for your phals, oncidiums, zygos., and dendrobiums?

Do you use one for all?

Do you feed then consistently even in winter months?

Do you use lights and for how long?

Humidity trays?

Do all of them go outside of just a few?

Sorry for so many questions, but I really would like to get a feel for your way of doing things?

I feel that I could improve a lot and was hoping you could share some pointers.

My Brasia Nodosa has bloomed in all her glory. There must be 45+ flowers open. The evenings smell fantastic!

Do you keep in a sunny window , under lights and how long, or in the greenhouse. It’s a beauty and great job!!

It's probably 30+ years old. This summer I will bite the bullet and try to split it - maybe. During the summer it reside outside hanging from the only shade tree I have in my yard. I bring it in in the fall when the nights start to get chilly. It is watered either by rain or by me using rainwater I collected. I water it two to three times a week during the hottest weather, and it receives almost full sun for most of the day. It loves the summer sun. I also feed it every other week with a diluted orchid fertilizer from miracle grow or better-gro, which ever I pick up. Its roots have totally encapsulated the plastic pot it is growing in.

The camera is facing south, windows are on 3 sides so its southeast, south , and south west. ceiling fan is on 24/7.

Watering depends on the plant, I try to adjust the mix to match the plant as much as possibe but also use self watering pots and some i just water more often

i do have a few cymbidiums, this tracyanum does good for me the others not so much.

I think mixes will always be a work in progress. I use different mixes for diffferent plants. I try to use inorganic material as much as possible. I find older established plants are more adaptable.

I do use lights but not with my orchids. Mostly on fruit trees and things too big for the sunroom.

Also trying these halo lights in dark spots in the house.

Everything goes outside in summer. i used to fertilize in the winter but this year I’m going to hold off. I’ve heard that too much fertilizer can result in thinner leaf cuticle which promotes infections

Here is another picture of the dendrobium. I count over 100 flowers. This one is in hydroton, when it out grew its pot I cracked it with a hammer, dropped it in a bigger pot and filled the space with hydroton.

I try to group together plants that like more water. I set this up for my Vanilla and Vanda. I spray them every few days.

Bill your nodesa is awsome. Mine is big but doesnt put out as many flowers. It’s starting to look like the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones . There was a wood basket in there at one point

Mike , I have plenty of plants that don’t look so great. I lost a few during a drought/ heat wave over the summer, both potted and landscape plants. My daughter was watering (alegedly) while I was away.

I‘m always trying new things and think I always will be. I would love to grow Miltoniopsis and Masdevallia but havent cracked that code yet.

Australian Dendrobiums also give me a hard time, but this year I finally have a few spikes on my kingianum. If only I knew what I did.

Well my belleara came into bloom last night.

I've yet to flower a kingianum, lovely growth, but no flowers :*hee*.

James - I never thought of grouping like needs together - duh! (head slap!). Thanks. I like the vanilla Vanda combo. I have yet to purchase a Vanda. Many years ago, when I lived on Long Island, the Orchid show was held at the World Trade Center (I worked there doing ironwork when it was going up!). I purchased a Vanda, Sensi Blue that I was able to bring into flower many times as I had built a small GH in my yard. Unfortunately, when I moved out to PA, there was no GH and I lost it. That was over 20 years ago, and I still miss that plant!

Bill, only took me 10 years to figure that out. Still working on putting my glass in the dishwasher instead of the sink.

I was at that show at the Trade Center on the walk over bridge to the winter garden. I also bought one of those blue Vandas, I lost that one when I moved to a new house.

The only Vanda I have now is a tricolor. I think it's a good Vanda for people who don't have the conditions for a typical Vanda. The roots aren't as crazy, it doesn't get as big, it's okay with less water and light than other types, and it holds onto it's lower leaves so the plant looks fuller.

Exactly! That's the bridge. Long time ago wasn't it? I helped it go up and I watched it go down. Lost a good friend that dayday, as did a lot of people.

The walk over bridge is still there , they moved down one block. I was fortunate enough not to loose anyone that day.

James, the kingianum is a pain to get to bloom , just like certain Cybidiums... I find mine need a cold and dry period, like a couple months worth to initiate buds.. I have a few starting to bud out and you have to wait until they are big enough to open before moving them. But worth it)

I saw the pictures in the other thread, ever everything looks great!

I had 7 spikes on the kingianum and 6 of them blasted, the one remaining spike only had 2 flowers. Maybe next year

I have a phal which has to be 8 years old at least. Every year it flowers for me, and this year is no exception. Too bad it isn't fragrant because there are many flowers open. It is in a shady area in my house, fertilized a few times a month and misted literally every day.

My 13 year old phal is just starting. No fragrance.
