What is wrong with what is there ? I think it works well in the space with all the other stuff going on and please if you must use dated tile wood look at least make it come close to looking real so matching grout for sure

I really wanted to install hardwood, but it’s impractical in our home (humid SE Texas, concrete slab). I’m very happy with the tile we have chosen for the floors. The grout lines will be as small as possible with a color matched grout, and a carefully considered layout. I agree that wood plank tile can look dated, but if made to look as natural as possible it can work. This will be the flooring through out the house, so there will be no awkward floor transitions or this flooring up against other flooring.

As for the current fireplace tile, I’m not a fan. It’s not offensive, but it holds zero visual interest for me. From your comment, it sounds like a adding another print would be overwhelming, so a solid color tile might be a better choice?

I agree with you, the fireplace tile is blah. Out of the two print tiles, I like the one on the right. If you'd rather not do a print, there are plenty of stone tiles (either real stone or porcelain lookalike) that have a lot of movement to provide interest.

Here’s what I’d do :

I’d actually leave the carpet in that room.
And then it won’t be too busy… you can do a patterned tile…

I like the blue pattern.

If it’s not an option - would you do herringbone pattern for the flooring?

I’d then go with a simpler tile around the fireplace. Like a simple slab.
I’d do it around the fireplace and the hearth - floor part…

Texas here, too … had wood plank tiles in my last house and loved them. Would do again.

I like both your fp tile choices. This board is pretty pattern-phobic, so keep that in mind. I don’t think either are too busy, and think they fit your style well.

Re: holiday decor — tiles, flooring, etc are set features, are background. They don’t have to match your Christmas decor. Lots of Spanish/southwestern/etc style homes have these patterns with beautiful, traditional Christmas decor.

But yes, if you’re just feeling too uncertain, agree with wish … lots of great neutral choices that have interesting textures and such out there, too.

ETA: I predict comments saying Talavera tiles shouldn’t be used with your more traditional fireplace elements, I don’t agree. They can look good with a variety of styles. Or a Talavera design in neutral colors.

I still struggling with choosing a fireplace tile. I want something that will be fairly timeless.

I’m considering a white 3D tile, penny tile or mosaic with matching grout. Would an all white surround be too much white in this space? The fireplace trim will be repainted in SW Pure White.
