I'm 2 zones warmer than you in MD. And our leaves are further along the fall cycle than yours. I usually have to wait until thanksgiving before the leaves are almost all dropped. But this year, they dropped a few weeks early. And we haven't had unusually cold weather. Not sure what's going on. Might be lack of tropical storms this year. In Sept and Oct we get almost all our rain from remnants of tropical storms.

Scarlet oaks are one of the latest/longest trees to color around here. Deep red/scarlet areas of the mountainsides w/little other colors. They prefer well-drained, relatively dry soils.

Cannot imagine having that much room to play with.

what i cant fathom is less than 4 seasons... those areas.. hot and hotter ... or hot and bug season ... etc .. lol

the best part of the garden year.. is the enforced 4 to 5 months of retirement from nov thru the end of march ... give or take ..

Now, there's a name I haven't heard in 35 years: Van Wade.

He was one of the first regional nurserymen with whom I became familiar, when we were looking for larger caliper trees to outfit the new construction at Gainsborough Farm in Versailles KY. A gifted plantsman, Van Wade grew a huge array of trees in Richland County, Ohio near Bellville - and was quite the poet in his lengthy Wade & Gatton catalog descriptions. When next I'm in my library, I'll see if I still have the tome he provided back in the mid '80s for a youngster to peruse on a cold winter evening.

Among other great plants, we picked out 72 matched 4" caliper Malus zumi var. calocarpa.
