Thoughts On Powder Room

A friend of ours and her husband recently moved into a small renovated farmhouse with a narrow floorplan. She is wondering about how others may find the placement of their powder room which is the only bathroom on the ground floor. Their entryway is a side facing door that opens into a tiny space and then into their living room. The powder room is across from the front door. We didn't have any pics to share but sketched this floorplan of just the main area to show the layout as well as their furniture arrangements. Dimensions may not be the best, in that the foyer area is literally only as wide as the front door.

To note, the powder room has ventilation and is well soundproofed so noises are not an issue. With the door not facing into the living room I feel it keeps it better separated from the living area even though it is nearby. Finally, both the toilet and sink are hidden from view if the door were to be open, so when entering the house you would not see them as the first thing when entering. Your eyeline is pretty much drawn straight into the living room area anyway. So curious what anyone else's thoughts may be and if you think she does';t need to worry lol! Thanks!

I'm more concerned about the piano placement. Its all wrong and should be diagonally placed across the other corner so the lid opens like a jewel box and the sound escapes into the room.

I agree - I definitely think that's doable (I had a powder room off a living room and it was in a much worse position)

How big would the powder room be?

Hi Cpartist, the room is roughly 3 ft wide by 6.5 ft long.

Thank you for the replies! She is big on looking into design notes and mentioned she saw it wasn't really good to have a powder room close beside a living room due to privacy and visibility to guests. I believe having it facing into the entry and not the living area itself, though, helps the most. While it is still visible, you're never looking directly into it from any seats around the corner.

I would consider extending the wall the toilet in on towards the front door a bit to provide a tad more separation.

Is this already existing, or something she is trying to add? If it's existing, I think it's just fine as is. If it's something she wants to add and there's no bathroom there right now, that might be a different conversation--but it sounds like it is already built. If it isn't in immediate need of renovation, I wouldn't worry about it until she's lived in the house for some time and decided if it's something she wants to change.

It is already existing, was added I believe by a previous owner at some point. She's not looking to renovate, but just wanted to see how other's may feel about it in terms of design and practicality, say if guests might be put off by it or not being where it is.

It certainly wouldn't bother me--I've lived in houses with similar placements, and I think it's fairly common so I don't think most guests would think about it one way or the other. I would suggest she live with it for a while and see if it still really bothers her once she's used to it--guessing it won't, but if it does, she can always change it then.

As long as it's a minimum of 3' wide, it should be good.

I don't see it as a problem.
