shade or 2 lighter than Gossamer Veil

Hello! I love the look of Gossamer Veil and Agreeable Gray is also a favorite. However the rooms we are paining have quite a bit less natural light then what I’m used to and am thinking a lighter version of Gossamer Veil may do the trick. I’d like more of an off white that will compare to Gossamer Veil. Something that will show a bit of contrast to our trim (Pure White) but still be very bright, light and airy. Im thinking an LRV of about 70-74. I don’t want tire to look at all yellow or too pink. Or be toooo cool and blue. Any ideas?

Despite all you read in blogosphere, cutting paint formula to achieve a specific result, is an expensive gamble.

There is NO industry standard to what 25%, 50%, 75% actually means.

All attributes of the colour have the capacity to alter, not just the aspect you don’t like.

Finding an existing colour with the attributes you require, is the streamlined approach and you can do that by examining a colour’s key attributes via The Color DNA Table at The Land of Color.

LRV only tells you how much light is reflected by a colour’s surface. It doesn’t tell you anything about its degree of colour.

That job is done by the attribute of Chroma.

More Chroma = more colourful. Less Chroma = closer to neutral.

How light a colour appears is the job of Value.

Higher the Value = the lighter the colour looks.

These are all attributes which can be considered separately.

Try White Duck or Eider White.

SW Incredible White may be a good option for you. This photo shows it with Pure White.

I like incredible white but I think it looked a tad too pink.

Any thoughts on lessening pigment by 25% or 50% ? I’ve read about this being done. Has anyone tried that and had success?

Sure, you can do that ... just keep buying the tweaked quarts of paint and testing them till you find one you are happy with!

I agree with Marylee in theory. In practice, I have had a lot of success with having formulas cut to 50%. You do have to realize that you may not end up with what you think you will get because you have invented a completely different color. I prefer to use colors that already exist in the manufacturer's repertoire when they exist. But when I have the right shade of blue or green that is too dark, cutting it in half has given me exactly the result I was looking for. I don't know that it works as well with neutrals. And I take Marylee's point that there may not be a universally agreed upon way to cut a formula. DH and I frequent a hardware store that employs a paint mixer who is very engaged in what she is doing and has all the industry education from the manufacturer, so she does it the way the manufacturer recommends. So I suggest you at least look at chips for the various colors that have been suggested before you start trying to formulate a custom mix.

I have Gossamer Veil everywhere. My kitchen has less light and faces West. It's a bit too dark now and I'm considering lightening it up. This room ALWAYS pulls green from any paint color i've used. Agreeable Gray pulls blue from my neighbors house, faces the same direction, so I didn't use that. I'm finding that Pearly White or White Duck is a lighter version of GV and thinking of doing this in my kitchen, but still jives with the rest of the house. What does everyone think? ( I also have 2000 Golden Oak cabinets. UGH)

Which did you go with? WD or PW? We are painting our exterior in Gossimer Veil and I can't decide between these two trim colors. Our house gets all of the afternoon sun and I'm worried PW will look too stark white but while I am wanting a low contrast, I do need just enough contrast. KWIM? Thanks!

Exterior is a whole other issue, I'm not familiar with outdoor paint colors and how they react. I did repaint Gossamer Veil "Alabaster" in my entire interior.
