Does the duvet or coverlet go with the carpet? Colors can be deceptive in pictures, but it looks like the carpet is brown/beigeish and the bed cover is gray and white. What color is the headboard? The wall color looks slightly lavender. If my observations are correct you are mixing warm and cool colors which is why the room doesn't seem right to you. Get a plain cream colored bed cover (not white-white) and paint the room a neutral color that will play well with both the headboard and the carpet. Maybe BM Edgecomb Gray. Or if you want something with a little color, lean green. You'll have to change the curtains too since they look very white. Evaluate that after you paint. If you're really interested in having cool colors you'll have to replace the carpet which would probably exceed your budget. But if the carpet is old this wouldn't be a bad use of funds.

Picture frame wall panels are a great way to fill wall space and it can be done on a budget! I would also put in sheer curtains to allow more natural light into the room. I would also suggest a cream colored paint for the walls and some paintings to add interest. You also may want to throw a splash of color in, like a light pastel or another neutral like a taupe brown. It looks like there's a shelf in the corner behind the dresser? So maybe add some wooden shelving to draw your eyes upward in the space. Here are some inspo pics, hope this helps!

The walls are white (it was this way when we moved in) the duvet is white and gray and the headboard is gray, curtains are white. I would like to change bedding and want more contrast in the room, I dont want it all neutral or all monotone.

I also do not like the white walls, I was hoping to get more color suggestions. I love rooms with color but I get overwhelmed trying to put it all together.

The room also only has the one small window and outside the window is a large tree so it gets very little sunlight coming through, only an hour or so in the evening when its low enough.

I, too, find neutral solid colors boring (or at least, I don’t have the skill to make them look like magazine pictures). But there are still some patterned quilts out there, like this one from BBB. Choose a paint color from the pattern.

You need to choose your bedding before getting ideas for wall colors. There are so many bedding choices in every color. We'll suggest what appeals to us but with out knowing your taste you'll tons of ideas.

^^^ That’s what I’d do. Find bedding or a rug you love and use it as the base to work from.

Patterns and colors are becoming popular again, so there are lots of options out there. Don’t be afraid to mix them.

What are some colors you like? How is the rest of your house decorated? Is all furniture staying?

I love this sort of moody, sagey-mossy green with grays, especially in low-light rooms, but I don’t know if it’s a look you like. It’s got a nice mix of modern with traditional and sophisticated.

For now all the furntiture is staying. I really like greens and blues and nice trim work. I was planning to dye a linen duvet I have already. I am considering dying it a stormy gray/blue. I just cant decide what to do on the big wall or if a rug is ok over carpet? A rug would mostly be covered by the bed as well.

I always use rugs over carpet, and just try to lay low from the rug police. :D

These are a couple of rooms I have saved. I know I hate the white, it feels drab and dark, I know Im looking at darker colors but my thinking was that if I added some color it would feel more on purpose. The lighting needs be changed as well, the overhead light is terrible.

What about a softer color? That’s what I’d do with your filtered light.

From the way it sounds, I don’t think you’d be happy with an all-over stark color, light or dark. I’d look for mid-tones, or if you go darker, earthy navy or olive.
