If you think wherever you are located is currently too cold for prompt replanting - with frozen soil being the main barrier - try the cold frame. If it is big enough and will provide a significant temperature difference. Or pile mulch or sandy soil on the roots of the clumps while they sit out waiting. Otherwise 'Herbstfreude' gets some quite low hardiness zone designations in written depictions of it (example at link). So unless it gets 20F colder there than whatever the specific hardiness cutoff is for this plant when it is in the ground the survival of your transplants may not be adversely affected anyway.

embo is spot on.. all that would stop me is frozen soil.. and though we may be witching its cold out there.. it isnt ground freeze cold for another month or two...

I don't think I have ever come across frozen ground in my life. Maybe a little frosty crust and certainly frozen pots but it's all year planting with my lean sandy loam. I always read posts from chilly parts with huge interest.

Never had it here either, rosa. Just a crust some mornings. Planting depends on whether the gardener is frozen, not the garden.

I'm right there with you, ladies :-) No frozen ground here for more than a few hours early in the day. I do the bulk of my permanent planting in winter but do tend to get put off by the rains. Being wet (and cold) does not make for fun gardening in my book!!

Yes! Rain always stops play for me (unless in the greenhouse, when I ,love it). I do wonder what Z5 (and lower) people do when there is snow cover. Especially earning a living. Autumn and winter is as busy as spring (and busier than summer), in Z8/9 and there is work all year round...but we still have distinct seasonal difference to enjoy.
