We had our family Thanksgiving yesterday. Days of cooking for 20 minutes of eating. I'm glad we had it yesterday. Today it is going to be unseasonably warm, 58. The outdoor fall decorations are coming down and the Christmas decorations are going up without having to wear hats, gloves, and winter coats :) Hubby got to leave early for deer hunting. Win win.

I have a huge extended family spread all over and logistics prevent us from gathering together with any kind of frequency. The last time was 4 years ago when we all met up in Mexico for Christmas. Holiday celebrations here tend to be small and rather localized gatherings. Since much of my local family is out of town visiting other family members, T'Day dinner this afternoon will be just my sister (our hostess), myself, my eldest niece and her teenage son and a friend stuck in town on her own. My sister is doing the turkey and an apple pie and the rest of us contribute - I'm doing veggies and an appetizer, my niece a salad and cranberry sauce. Judy, our friend who is not a cook, gets a pass :-)

I'm just hoping for a few leftovers. That's one of the drawbacks of not cooking a T'Day feast one's self, which I haven't done since my divorce - T'day leftovers are even better than the main meal! Freshly roasted turkey sandwiches are the best!!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! A small quiet affair here - just me and hubby and son staying home and cooking. Not up for big family gatherings this year. But later this evening will pop down the street to see my new(ish) twin baby granddaughters. Who can ask for better blesssings than that?

Disappointed in the weather this weekend - today and Saturday are supposed to be quite beautiful, but today I'm helping to cook and Saturday I'm working. I'm off tomorrow and Sunday but of course it will rain. Oh well, maybe I can at least get a few dahlias dug up between the rain drops, now that we've FINALLY had a frost!

Happy Thanksgiving! We had our Canadian day on Oct. 10th. I have a sister that has been in Virginia over twenty years, they used to celebrate both but now only do yours. Here is an arrangement for you.

^^ That's beautiful! Did you do that yourself? .I can grow flowers pretty darn well but suck at arranging them, the best I can do is stick a bunch of sunflowers or gladiolas in a vase and call it a day.

Thank you mxk, I will tell my DD. She is a floral arranger and at all the holidays her lovely boss tells her to make and take home one for each of us.

one would think the real challenge to a chef.. is to cook the food he hates to smell ... look at and eat ...

Do you guys have turkey at Xmas too? I can't bear it myself (turkey)...or much of the rest of it, tbh. Some things we are expected to eat are mystifying in their popularity. Bread sauce (FFS), Sprouts (shudder, Christmas pudding (not in my house). and as for pumpkin pie(?). Doing it all on a midweek in November is a bit weird too - do you get Friday's off work? I get the family and friends thing...and I am always keen on a good meal (just not that one), but hey, hope you all had a good time with loved ones. Another year...just a winter to get through.

Obvs watching the football - possibly of a different sort to you guys. England vs US (World Cup) tonight.

His tools?!?! Oh no sir, not hardly. This is MY kitchen. LOL!

rosaprimula, some also serve turkey for Christmas, some just serve ham, some make a standing rib roast. I serve turkey and ham for Thanskgiving, and then roast a beef tenderloin for Christmas. Some folks do get the Friday after Thanksgiving off from work, but it’s back to business for most, I think. I don’t know the history of why Thanksgiving is on a Thursday, though, good question!

We've had turkey at Christmas sometimes, but more often a beef or pork roast, depending on what we feel like. We do Christmas Eve at my house, just my family, so we have leeway to do what we want any given year without too much outside griping lol, and we like to mix things up. Sometimes we go Italian and do lasagne, bruschetta, italian soup, a fish; sometimes we do the Feast of the Seven Fishes, other years we've gone Slovak and had a buffet of halupki, kapustnica, pierogi, halushky, etc. We've even started with the oblatky and had the extra place setting. (although we go more traditional American with the desserts when we do Slovak - prune or poppy seed cookies just aren't my thing lol). And no carp in the bathtub lol. I do draw the line somewhere!

When you grow up in such a multi-ethnic family as I did, it's nice to have so many traditions to draw on - and even to borrow from others that have nothing to do with you!

Most people I think do have the Friday after Thanksgiving off. Obviously medical personnel, retail workers, etc, have to go to work but it seems to me most people have it off. But then many of us are back to work on Saturday!

Grief, I have mainly managed to swerve having jobs which have no decent holidays. All the jobs which have made the most demands on my time have often been the worst paid. I have done the Xmas dinner thing for the last 45 years or so, with no break on the horizon. If I had to do it twice!! O noes. I don't do anything like a traditional meal though (made them all eat various winter salads one year)

I have been reading a most depressing book - Nomadland, about a demographic of older workers (and increasingly younger ones too) unable to retire...and increasingly, since the 2008 housing crisis, forced into a transient mobile existence. Workampers. A horrible and increasingly plausible reality (without radical change).

Ok ok, maybe I should havent been so strict. How about we replace vegan with vegetarian? And I didnt mean the whole meal to be meat free but rather just a dish or two.

It is just my husband and I this year. We are not big turkey eaters so we made a stuffed roasting hen with all the trimmings, dressing, salad, rolls and my recipe for sweet potatoes. And rather than pumpkin pie, pecan pie.👍🏽

I made a pecan pie this year too! My first attempt, which must have been successful because it was gone very quickly! I;m not a fan of pecans or pie, really, for that matter, so more for the family. I just ate the ice cream!

And yes, ken, rouge has a point, lol. Wasn't so long ago we were all really concerned about you! Stay healthy! (but I too would pass on the vegan thing lol!)
