We use a regular lawn spreader with a cover for salting our driveway. The cover keeps the salt dry when using it outside. We don't use a large spreader, our driveway is only double wide and under a 100 ft . We use calcium chloride.

In my first house I use to wear strap on cleats to walk down the hill to my house from the bus stop.

did the regular spreader have any issues operating in winter vs summer. obviously you are going to get snow/ice on the gears or whatever that you dont get in summer.

We keep it in the garage when not in use. The driveway is cleared of snow before we pull it out to salt, so there is no snow or ice to get into the gears. We've had no problems. I wouldn't be home until tomorrow then I'll take a picture of it.
