Take out those bits under the cabinets and run a new piece of moulding to the depth of the toe kick.

I get the idea of the squared edge, but it is going to be a major dust catcher and the square shoe mould is going to chip and gouge like crazy, because the edges are so sharp. Shoe mold for the bottom and a baseboard with an eased edge at least, not a sharp top corner, would be better choices.

I'm a big fan of flat baseboards and flat shoe mould. Yours (especially the pic showing the sand mix) somehow seems just a bit deeper than what I've seen in other pics (see the pic I found at https://nextluxury.com/home-design/best-modern-baseboard-ideas/) Perhaps if you replace the shoe mould with something a little taller and a little thinner, it would look more like what you're looking for?

Thank you both for your advice and suggestions. . I already realize that I made a mistake as this is a beach rental and there will be a constant problem with dust and sand.

good luck

Did you try turning shoemold different way?

I wish I could do that. That is not actually shoe mold. I have no idea why they did it this way but the 1x6 baseboard is actually sitting on top of a 1x2. So I now have a 7” baseboard with a too wide shoe mold. If I try to take the badeboard off, it is going to tear the walls up and I would have to go even higher with new baseboards. I am trying to figure out if there is some piece of molding that I could put between the two boards to help it look better.

You could try a piece of Ogee Shoe Molding. It will have a very slight ogee.

I know you are correct. Thank you all for your advice and helping me.

I don't know what that is in pic #2 but you shouldn't see endgrain on mouldings. In the pics where the base and shoe intersect with the door casing, the casing should be thick enough that you don't see mouldings sticking out beyond the face of the casing. I would remove the shoe and re-install install it with a self-return
