Hosta U 2022 .......................

Good morning and welcome to U. We have gone so far and still have a way to go. OK lets get busy. I have stoped the nightly owl watching. My son said they make a lot of noise and he will let me know when they are out there. Making him smoke outside is starting to pay off. A Bald Eagle was seen and videoed 3 miles away. But nothing was as handsome as this guy. I startled him from my fence and he flew to the neighbors tree. Handsome, isn't he? Glad I had the long lens on.

Hostas Hostas Hostas Back to business

I told you.

    I dont have any u

i do have a bunch of unnamed plants i want to divide and grow out as original stock.

it will take a few years. they only have garden names or are completely unnamed

so lets see if somebody has a knack for naming.

sometimes a little back story helps. i got this rare pychnophylla with a thin border from the late hideko gowen. She was japanese and a good friend of herb benedicts. if your a hosta head like me you should have heard of him. anyways she probably supplied him with a few wild japanese hosta to work with.

I bought this Kufikiu Iwa from her that she brought back from japan.

i know the one in the library is incorrect.

it sported one eye which i like alot. pure white ruffled margin, and the last hosta to bloom in my garden.

it needs a name. lets see what you’ve got for a name. maybe it will stick

Bonus points if it starts with u but it doesnt have to. I will wait a few days to pick

    unnamed

no matter how often I see wildlife it’s always special..🦉🦊🦅

    Undulata Albomarginata

I moved these from the front (previous owners planted them)..

I think? I also inherited Undulata Erromena with the house..I have several unidentified plain green scattered in back..no pics of them..

Paula, that’s a hawk, yes? Maybe he will become your new garden partner! Love the jokes…..very interesting about barns…..in Wisconsin out in farmland, you see all kinds of dilapidated barns. The reason for this is, as long as the barn has a roof, the farmer does not pay taxes on it. Go figure…..my house has a roof, but…..no luck there!

Ken, I am very surprised you haven’t sent a link for the Nat King Cole song, “Unforgettable” as you often do!

Beth, nice Undulatas in the sun. I see Unforgettable has not only lovely leaves but beautiful purple flowers. 👍🏽

Old_dirt, your Unforgettable is so large and puckered! Pretty

Hosta_maker, first name that came to mind is Snow Ruffle, but it’s not a U ☹️

Shadow, what a nice big UE. Such a soft green. Nice big UA bigs like it’s happy where it is in the garden!

Nicholsworth (Ann, right?) I get yours and perens names mixed up. Need to write it down….lol
I think UA looks good in a row planting….you can plant many other plants with it!

peren thought this may be UE. Not sure as it’s so shiny. But it has the correct color flower.

debra..yes my name is Ann..peren (I shorten her user name) is Laurie..I think? that’s the correct spelling..

    am I right Laurie?..

I like your suggestion of Snow Ruffle!..I was trying to come up with a Snow name too..didn’t figure out a cute one..

hosta_maker..didn’t have any idea how to incorporate the background information..so I tried to come up with a pretty name using immaculate..snow..frost..alabaster..polar..

    ribbon..pristine..untouched..

    border..perimeter..edge..gave up..

    not a U but here’s a funny name..

    Salad with Ranch..

    Beautiful Paula

Beth & old_dirt Unforgettable is quite lovely.

hosta_maker love that pycnophylla sport. How about Undercurrent or Under Ruffle Edge?

    Shadow what healthy looking specimens.

Ann that is a great row of UA. Yes you have had the spelling of my name correct all along. Salad with Ranch is a cute name.

Debra I think Snow Ruffle is a great name. I actually thought your NOID could be ventricosa not UE.

Gary very nice US & Ultramarine.

    Nothing interesting from me.

    Undulata Albomarginata #1

UA #2. I only need it in one spot.

Shiso Fine - cause it's a Japanese herb? Or if you need it "U know Shiso Fine". And if you breed with it, the list of Shiso ... could go on and on and ...

I didn't get a pic of Urchin last year, so here's an older one.

    Urchin in hiding

I liked Living on the Edge..but checked the hosta library and there’s a Livin’ on the Edge..

steve..Shiso Fine didn’t immediately click to me until I said it to myself..clever!..

Thats probably why their are not alot of u names. its not real catchy.

alot of real good ideas. and funny too. most of the time it takes me a long time to find a name, i come up with a few then wait. if i still like it after a month or two it sticks. i knew bloodline would be an important plant so i mulled over that for a year.

the snow and white names are good.

    ranch is funny

steves japanese twist is great too.

what is the way to go …right?

something that has broad appeal? niche names like food? something descriptive of the plant? something from its history?

is their a consensus? whats your favorite hosta name.

wildest dreams was named by jeff white. the back story is that their was a local hosta grower seller here in mn, rob mcwilliams. he grew seedlings. his goal in life was to have something good enough to register. A long story short, he got sick and died. his wife invited a hybridizing group i was in to take some of his plants to use in breeding. one of his best plants a streaker was registered by hugo phillips as robs dream. one of my sports from it was named by jeff as wildest dreams. its become my go to plant for creating variegated ruffled edge seedlings.

…in the end he acheived his goal postumously.

It is all in the name and Bloodline was so perfect. Uplifted Spirits?

Yeah, U is difficult. My first thought was "Unforgettable". I even got the old standard song by Nat King Cole going in my head. Then, I checked the HL---- already taken.
