Living room layout

I’m looking to maybe change the layout of my living room. It’s a sunken living room and it’s tricky. We have a large TV 55” I think and a sectional couch. Right now one window is blocked off by the couch. I’m considering a new couch (Natuzzi Authentico) but it’s also a sectional. So if I go that route I’d put it where the old couch is I guess. Anyways what other possibilities do I have?

It’s me (44f) and 2 teens living here. We mostly use this room to watch TV. But my husband recently passed away and I’d like to change things up and make it a little more fun and I also would like a comfy spot to lay down and read a book.

Kristen, first…my condolences to you on the passing of your husband. I hope we, the Houzzer community, can help you refresh your living room to make it more comfortable for you and your family. To refresh the room with the current furnishings, the sectional/area rug/coffee table grouping could be pulled away from the window wall and closer to fireplace so it floats in the room. The end of the rug could go right up to the hearth tile and center the rug on the fireplace. The rocking chair can stay on that corner of the rug but it will now be beside the fireplace rather than in front of it and will be closer/feel a part of the seating group. Do you use the fireplace? If not, group the smaller plants in front of the fireplace, with the larger ones on both sides of the fireplace. The shelving unit can then go away and the window will be unobstructed and more light will come into the space. When budget allows, invest in a custom cut/bound area rug from a carpet remnant store that covers the alternative wood flooring inset. I haven’t gone off site to check out the Natuzzi sectional, but it seems the configuration of the current sectional seems to work in that space. If purchasing new, a long couch with one/two chaise ends may work better. A to-scale drawing of the floor plan would be more helpful too. It seems from the measurements the nook area may be deeper than the way it’s drawn. If so, a comfy recliner…and bookshelves if you have physical books…could be located there to give you a cozy reading nook.

Hi Susan, thank you! I like the idea of a reading nook. I posted on another site and someone suggested moving the TV between the windows, and then having the sectional with the long end in front of the stairs (the longer side) and the short end against the half wall to the left of the windows. I could try this out with my current sectional just to get an idea of how it will be.

I really liked the Natuzzi sectional (ive had my eye on it for a bit and I feel like I could use a little pick me up right now), but I am open to other ideas as well if the sectional doesnt make the best use of the space. I just want to rearrange so that things seem new and different.

I also wanted to add that I HATE this fireplace. Its a gas one and doesnt really let off much heat. I hate the mantel and the tile. I just think I need to replace the fireplace insert before I spend money on tile and a new mantel. And I'm not sure how much a new gas insert would cost.

I’ve had a couple gas fireplace inserts installed in our last two homes…was several thousand dollars a couple years ago…probably closer to 5k now. I don’t think there is enough room to have the longer portion of your current sectional perpendicular to the window wall…it would block any entry into the room. And TV’s are best positioned on a solid wall without competing light from windows or lamps. Plus it’s nice to have windows close to seating for reading/doing tasks.
