Mmmm, I am venturing forth into growing the taller nepetas although my choices, nepeta cyanea (syn. kubanica) and n.nuda are likely to be a bit more challenging for me (but would be great for you, Chris). I have a bunch of bareroot nepetas on order as they generally do very well under the roses, in my well-draning soil...although n.nuda 'Romany Dusk', n.kubanica and one called'Summer Magic probably will need supplemental irrigation and are destined to be taller specimens alongside caryopteris and coronilla (in my new gravel area).

I generally find propagation OK (although I am on safer ground with straight up division of nepetas).. Growing cuttings is quicker- but more testing (for me) than growing from seed. I am ramping up my cutting techniques a lot more this year...as the prospect of hundreds of tiny pots, all summer, always results in vast rates of attrition.

I like to use the first juvenile basal shoots in spring/early summer and grow 5 or 6 softwood cuttings around the edge of terracotta pots, I remove all the leaves apart from a couple at the top of inch stems. I generally prefer to leave them uncovered, in bright shade (iykwim) but given the occasional top-spray.r A process not unlike rooting lavenders and pinks. I don't always bother with rooting hormones, but if I do, I have had the very best results with Rhizopon AA powder (I generally have the 1% pink for most things)..

Thank you @rosaprimula UK (Cambridge) Z8/9! Those two varieties are very nice. I'll have to see if I can find them offered somewhere. I'll also check to see if the nepetas are big enough this spring for teasing some small chunks out. That seems like the easiest approach. Since the deer are so rampant in the front yard, I'm eager to multiply whatever they won't eat and spread them around. The front yard has always been more of an afterthoguh, but I'm hoping to change that this year. I did quite a bit of plant shuffling up there in the fall as well, and eager to see the results.
