Judging by the plants around it this is a tough spot to grow. Maybe Bagasaurus has made an appearance before his untimely demise, or it could be the chipmunk tunnels. But

Valley's Ruffle Shuffle has no problem growing here.

After reading about how Ephemeral Lace's edge goes to a mint green last year, I bought Venetian Lace hoping for something similar in the middle. A winner in my book in just its first year. I'll be watching this more closely this year. I did order Ephemeral Lace this year anyway. Have I mentioned how much I like the green on green? Venetian Lace:

the tulip tree and impatiens were volunteers..I wish the tulip tree had survived..I didn’t remove it but it’s gone..

It would appear that my possible Ventricosa, is not based on what hosta_maker said the about the flower. It’s not deep purple nor bell shaped. 😕

other hosta can have a somewhat bell shape; and then there are hybrids that can mix it all up with different shapes and colors. But alot of times you can get a tell on which hosta was the dominate species contributor based on the flower shape.

island breeze has alot of longipes in it. longipes has quite alot of variety in the species. longipes is used mostly to pass on red pets, scapes, and sometimes in the tubes of the flowers.

this seedling has some ventricosa in it, thus the flower shape, but longipes from first blush dominates the color of the pets, scapes and flower.

this heartache seedling has ventricosa in it too.

but crossed with war and peace ventricosa still won out.

..its not the same as the original species, but the character of it is recoginizable as ventricosa dominated.

hosta_maker - I think you may have corrected one of my hostas. I have what I ID'd as Royal Standard by the leaf but never paid attention to the flower. I think it may be Ventricosa. I'll try to remember it with NOID.

Victory - Have had for several years but gets eaten down almost every year.

Nice old dirt, the shape and color of flower on that species is fairly unique.

this would be the place for vestigials. those leaflets that grow off the scape.

ya gotta love hosta, if you pay close attention they can do all kinds of acrobatic twists and turns thru out the season.

I am not really sure of its repeatability. i will keep a look out for it.

at some point they will focus their energy to reproduction. those efforts will end up in the scape, flower and ultimately, if your lucky …the seed. the sugars and other nutrients are trying to out advertise each other. bees are suckers for advertisement.
