Shutter mounting location and shutter width?

I’m making and putting up some simple but functional board and batten shutters on the house.

Should I mount hinges on:

1. the red marks (brick) and have the shutters cover the entire brick opening (this is the current size shutter from the pic) or

2. the blue marks (window casing) and have the shutters just cover the window, not the entire brick opening? The window casing is wood wrapped with aluminum and I believe strong enough.

Wooden shutters will be painted, just trying to get the design right before making more.

Something else I’m trying to figure out is these windows below, close to the planters, won’t allow the same width shutter when mounted to the brick (outlines in blue), but may work when mounted to the casing because the shutter would need to be narrower to just cover the window. Maybe this will influence the mounting locations and width of all shutters?

You don't need shutters. Especially since you don’t have enough room.

Instead, I would invest in a landscape plan for the entire front of house.

A proper window shutter should be sized so that if closed, the window would be completely covered, even if you never actually close them.

Deciding the width is fairly easy since each shutter should be half the window’s width. I would not add them to your double windows for that reason since it could look odd. I’m far from a pro but it seems the shutters should be attached to the window trim/casing in order to just fit into the window opening when closed.

See if this link is any help. I’m guessing you‘re likely already aware of most of it.

Like this example with shutters mounted on the window frame.

You are not going to be able to design shutters for that double window - so don't try. Shutters do need to look like you could use them, even if you never do.

Another option you have (besides landscaping) is to paint the window trim a complementary color.

On the framing but unsure if you want that many shutters along the front of your house? Maybe someone can do a mock up for you first.

Thank some of you for the unsolicited landscaping feedback on my post about shutter mounting placement 🙄

We are working on a landscaping plan and I’ll welcome feedback on that post once it’s up. Maybe I’ll even link it here for you.

Regarding the subject of this post, I think we’ve decided to go with the hinge mounts on the window framing and have the shutters cover the windows themselves, not the entire brick opening. The shutters won‘t be quite as big as the one pictured and we will add ine to either sode of every window, including the double window. The double window will only cover 1/2 of the two outer windows, but this way they’ll fit between the window and the planters.

If there are other opinions on mounting location, please let me know. Thanks!
