I dont think it woud cause the flowers to drop, unless you spray the flowers directly.

I was thinking along the lines of keeping them in check until it’s done flowering. I agree spraying buds is fine, I just wouldn’t spray the open flowers. I would suggest going longer than 2 weeks, those things are bard to grt rid of.

James J - Yes they are! I have a variegated mooncactus downstairs in my basement w/ mealies r/n and have been spraying w/ alcohol (at first), then switched to this insecticidal soap and it’s not eradicating them. But bugs on orchids are gone upon recent inspection. I have Malathion and neem oill out in my unheated potting shed but I should have checked the labels on them back in early fall, to see if freezing temps renders them void. Not sure that I’d want to spray Malathion in my house, anyway.

I don't like using insecticides indoors, spring is right around the corner so you could keep going with the soap until its warmer and then blast them outdoors.

I would keep treating even if you don't see any , I've had them pop back up after weeks of not seeing any adults. They hide down in the mix and in the leaf folds.

My plan for scales and mealies is to blast with water to knock off as many eggs and crawlers as possible. Then systemic drench followed by insecticidal soap.

Indoors I just rinse in the sink with warm water from the spray nozzle and treat with insecticidal soap. With phals I use a paper towel with soapy water and wipe the top and bottom of the leaf. I find that will get me through the winter.

Ive thought about setting up a plastic tote filled w/ water mixed w/ insecticide (once repot season is here) and throwing unpotted plants (whole plant) in for a bath. Maybe let them soak 30 mins or so. That should kill most things, Id think. easier than spraying every nook and crannie, especially on smaller-leaved plants.

Rebecca - do not - I repeat, do not spray Malathion indoors. It is a very toxic substance, and you don't want to be breathing it or inhaling the liquid.

Bill M. Thats kind of what I was thinking also. Thanks. The buds are still not opening- theyve been there about 6 wks now. Any ideas on whats taking so long, or is that normal? This is the first time my orchid has bloomed and its about 6 yrs old.

Orchids and hoyas both try or patience! They seem to take forever to open, but once they do, it's worth it. Have patience, keep it warm and mist it occasionally during the day and before you know it they'll open. Best of luck with it.
