Peren, love all your shots……you and many others have a such a great eye for garden design. It seems each plant is exactly where it’s supposed to be……like no other site would work! Everything is sooooo full! That’s a goal I am going for this year. My photos show lots of real estate. How do you garden without stepping on your plants? Also, that tall plant that looks like white feathers—- is that Aruncus? (Testing myself)

Thank you Debra! Well the fullness certainly comes with the age of the plants, I have been at this a long time. Hopefully the newly planted areas will leap this year. I live on rocky ground, Canadian Shield (pre-cambrian shield). If you enlarge the pics you will see plenty of rock that I use as stepping stones. The soil is fabulous but full of rocks and boulders. I can't fight it so I just go with it. I have been a rock hound forever. The tall plant is Persicaria polymorpha. It is one of my favorites.

Wow Paula, the fungus thing creeps me out! 😝 I love Canadian Geese, in spring and fall I can’t wait to hear them honking and flying overhead! I am about an hours drive away from the Horicon Marsh a big stopping over point for them. They gather in huge numbers there……amazing to see and hear!!!

Really like seeing everyone's 'whole' pictures. It is sometimes difficult to get an entire bed in without losing some of the identity.

Got a bonus here, that all green in back was my not sure NOID. Seeing the flowers here, I believe it is definitely ventricosa. :-)

Beautiful garden beds everyone!! I often admire those of you who have more suburban/woodsy gardens! So much space and opportunity to plant lots and lots of plants! But, I also realize it’s a lot more work! Kudos to you all city and suburban gardeners!! So much beauty in the world!

My perennial garden which is getting more shade every year. I guess things change each year and plants need to move.

Debra really lovely! The spots with new additions will soon have nothing but full plants. If you are like me you do not miss the Ajuga you got rid of, all the more space to work with. I fully endorse your signage. I wonder if I am the only one here that is rural.

Beth another lovely garden! Our gardens certainly do change over time whether the changes are of our choosing or not. Were the pines damaged that had to be removed?

peren the pines were blue spruces and they got the blue spruce canker disease. It seams they do not live long in Michigan, I think it is too wet for them. I have been planting White Spruce and Douglas Firs lately which hopefully live longer.

As a hybridizer i am not looking for display beds.

i spend as little time weeding as possible and no mulching.

A lot of the active breeders i work out of pots, for pollinating.

A good one eventually goes in the ground for evaluation.

Pots get buried in the fall

some in the ground need isolating with mesh bags.

others can just grow on to maturity.

some act as ground cover

then its seed gathering and growing. all year round hosta growing.

Very impressive hosta_maker. It is quite a commitment in years to get a plant to market. You have given us many beauties!

I love everyone's full mature Hosta beds. I keep hoping that this year mine will have similar density to it, but with the over-amending of soil I did, Maple tree roots and deer browsing it has been a slow journey so far.

Always my favorite thread of the winter. The beds posted above are beautiful, unique, and a reflection of your love for hosta. Enjoyed looking at each and every one!

Bailey hosta

Sadly, we lost Bailey a few months ago. He loved the back yard as much as I do, so I thought it fitting to include him. Wont be the same in the spring without him.

mbug this is one of my favorite threads too. So nice to see how we all put them together and you do it very well indeed. Just beautiful. Bailey was a handsome boy and my heart is breaking for you. It is so hard losing our gardening companion. I truly feel for you.

So very sorry that you’ve lost your garden companion and best friend. Looks like he had a great life and was loved, from the pics you’ve posted over time.

mbug, so sorry you lost your garden companion! It is a hard thing in our lives when we lose our animal companions, especially when they keep us company in the garden. May you always remember him when in the garden…..he’ll be with you in spirit!

You garden beds are just beautiful!! I am always so impressed by the color mixing in your yard….the hostas and their companions just seem perfectly arranged but yet your garden is so natural…. I think my favorite bed is the Victory bed—-just magnificent!!
