Roses that attract pollinators
Riffing off the discussion in another thread, I want to start a list of roses that attract pollinators. I started my garden with the idea of planting natives and pollinator friendly non-natives, but then I started doen the rabbit hole if roses and now I an looking for roses to add to my butterfly border that will still support polllinators.
So far, Hermosa is a stand out in this regard. Butterflies love her!
The bees love Yellow Submarine.
I purchased Tottering by Gently because I like singles and read that it was good for attracting pollinators. i also have Lafter which is supposed to be good, but hadn’t gotten much notice in my garden (both Tottering by Gently and Lafter are new and haven’t had heavy flushes yet).
Which roses get the most pollinator traffic in your gardens?

3 years agoHarison's Yellow got lots of little bees, but I got rid of this rose. HC Banshee is also loved by little bees. Sometimes I'd find bees in Moonlight in Paris, but I don't have that rose anymore either. Oh, and John Cabot also has little bee visitors.
MANY of my roses seem to be a top choice in nesting material for leaf cutter bees, which I love!
I bought several more open roses this year in hopes that it will make my rose collection more wildlife friendly, so hopefully I'll be able to add more to this thread in the future.

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoGreat pictures Markay, Magpie & Jeri! Your going to love Tottering By Gently, Markay. I had it in my previous garden and pollinators loved it. Another favorite pollinators loved was Scarborough Fair. I miss both of them.
Two roses that I planted in my new garden last spring that attracted pollinators were Pretty Polly White and Rise Up Lilac Days. I’ll have to take pictures of them this year.Markay MD-Zone 7B thanked Dave5bWY- 3 years ago

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoIf you want a deep cupped rose that pollinators love, and are open to a climber, consider Wollerton Old Hall. I don't have any photos of bees in action but this winter that bush is absolutely overflowing with hips as if every single bloom was fertilized.

3 years agoThe bees here really love Darlow's Enigma.
That being said none of my roses seem to attract as many bees as my rosemary and basil do when they flower.
I think technically hornets are considered as pollinators, but not the kind you want to attract I guess. When they invaded the garden last September/October, they sucked the life out of the unopened buds of Huddersfield Choral Society and Pink Ekrixis more than any other roses.

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoMarkday Wollerton old hall gets blackspot and defoliates like many Austin’s here, but it isn’t the worse by any means. Here it doesn’t lose all the foliage until after the spring flush is over which is not bad without spray.
The bees here love Dr. Robert Korns, Darlow’s enigma and Mel’s heritage. Here are some pictures I screenshot from a video I took July the 5 in 2022. Mel’s heritage was still super blooming since May and it never lots any foliage until winter.
If you dont have Mel’s Heritage you need it
4 or 5 years old plant
2nd year own root band. This plant is much larger now even with heavy pruning

3 years agoI have no experience with this rose from Antique Rose Emporium, but I think it looks very charming and the listing in ARE claims it attracts butterflies and bees. It should, since it’s named Butterfly Bliss.
