Two Front Doors

How might a second front door be either eliminated or used in another way so that it is no longer looked at as the "other front door"? Photos of the house we are working on.

These types of questions have been asked before in the forums. You can paint the secondary door the same as the body of the house, and paint out the trim, too, so it "disappears" more into the side of the house. You can paint the steps of the secondary entrance so they don't stand out as much as the front door steps.

Emphasize the walkway to the actual front door with a hedge alongside it and larger potted plants (colorful) flanking the actual front door. Consider making that walkway a different material, like brick or pavers, or line it with brick/pavers, while the other walkway may have no lining material and nothing remarkable about it. Perhaps a large WELCOME mat at the actual front door.

A pretty sconce next to the front door, and house numbers right nearby. Sconce can be approx 1/3 the door height.

2nd door is often an aux entrance to mud, office, etc. A screen fence/wall helps obscure.

Separate walk to entry door might help,

If you don’t need access to the yard from one of the doors, you could remove the steps (and path) and enclose the porch with railings.

Which one is the main door? My best guess is that the door closest to the driveway (on the right) is the main door since it kind of looks like there's a gate over the other door (on the left).

Put light fixtures on either side of the main door if possible to provide welcoming light in the evening. Hang clearly visible larger house numbers by the main door. Remove the garbage can and put the pots in a neat row up each side of the steps to invite the visitor up. Again assuming it's the door by the driveway that's the main door, put a small bench or pair of chairs on the porch.

For the secondary door, paint out the trim and the door the same color as the house so it sort of disappears. I would update the landscaping, with a focus of creating a proper bed in front of the walkway that helps hide the walkway and keep the focus on the other door.

    Here are a few suggestions:

Why does it bother you? I find it hard to imagine many people go right past the door you use to a secondary door.

I’d make a large front porch and connect the two.

Can you switch the second door to French doors? Or windows?

Can you make the front door more grandiose? Double doors? Add window to the right? Plants?….

Thank you for the ideas. We will sell this property in two years when we move. We have some time to make changes. The current task this spring is to pull out all the old plants/landscaping so we have a clean slate to work with. I like the ideas of creating a large porch/deck and making what appears to be a garden in that area.
