Here's some more of the darker flowers. What's identified here as venusta I have since ruled out as being as named, haven't figured out what it is as yet, it's highly unlikely to be that since none of the pictures of flowers of said specie look anything like it.

Peren, your hostas are so prolific! All of them have soooo many petioles. I have never seen such a large Praying Hands! Mine did not flower for the first 6(?) years….. I never thought it would. But it only gets a few petioles. I love the color on Goober and Gemstone…..and I will have to look more closely at the buds on Fire & Ice…..what a great shot!

Doug, those flowers on your 'Red Tubes' certainly look quite a bit darker than the ones Hugo Philips has on the HL. Love the flowers on the sparkling series!

once they open the color dilutes in the petals, the tubes stay red.

i also noted the colors on the original get darker with direct light

A little experiment of covering some to see the color difference.
Interesting how environmental factors affect color.

i suspect some of the sparkling ones have that intensity from the thickness of the flowers and wider biosynthetic pathways

hosta_maker such a great array of flowers. I think we all like dark or striped flowers. I am excited to be getting Ki-renjyaku in spring. I just hope it will flower well here.

Debra just lovely! It is hard to imagine those who cut off the scapes because they think the flowers aren't worthy (I know a few). Thankfully when they see certain ones like the mice or Goober etc. they rethink it.

i am interested in what makes hosta tick, in general and specifically.

i have often noticed the clear celophane like layer in hosta flowers and leafs. it seems to reveal itself fairly often in hosta if you really look. i assume its part of the back epidermis.

is this common to many plants in general?

I have certainly seen that especially on the flowers of Fragrant Bouquet. I had assumed because it is in full sun it was fading throughout the day. Interesting.

I grow a lot of perennials and have never noticed it on any other flower. I will keep a closer eye out this year.

ETA: Where did your post disappear to hosta_maker , concerning the translucent outer layer of a Hosta flower???

I don't take many intentional flower pictures, most are incidental.

peren.all - I am guilty sometimes of cutting off scapes, usually when they distract from the plant, like the bottom flowers finiished or the scapes are unruly.

I should pay more attention to individual flowers as i'm seeing it is a good way for plant ID.

Very nice old_dirt! I have been known to cut the scapes from Undulata Albomarginata. They interfered with the look of S&S behind it and they are one that is nothing to write home about!

One certainly can’t blame you for cutting flowers that interfere with the presentation of a fav hosta….. I generally cut the petioles once all the flowers are spent….. I will leave any petioles with flowers for the bees. I don’t have tons of flowers for bees so if they want the hosta ones, they can have them! Lol 🐝

Hosta_maker, I have never noticed the cellophane layer on flowers, but I certainly start this year. How interesting! Love all the flowers you posted….all those reds and purples! Yay!

Old_dirt, Sweet Home Chicago is a prolific bloomer….really nice! Foxfire Palm Sunday has a really interesting bud head…..roundish, reminds me of Queen Josephine which I don’t a picture of. Did you post your NOIDS in that category? They have very pretty flowers!

I loved seeing all the blooms today. Hosta blooms are a added plus that I look forward to every year. I have been away from data for awhile so I will work on catching up.
