Hosta Leaves 2022 ........................

It is all about the leaf. There were times when I could just stare at the leaves and be amazed by the colors, the design, the shape. Let's see some leaves today!

I did see the alignment of the two planets, but my time zone was too early for the moon.

Have a great day everyone.

Peren, all are stunning! You have a good eye for composition.

Paula, I couldn’t stop laughing as I scrolled through the jokes!

Peren, for not taking many leaf pictures, you still have quite a few. My favorites are Hanky Panky, LS Cupcake, Powder Blue, Powder Keg the King!

Utog, I have Wave Runner and Amalia ear each other in the yard. I actually had them missed labeled. When I finally realized it, I had to write a note to remember which is which! Wave Runner has a dark center with a double light margin and Amalia is a light leaf with a darker margin…… lol

    here’ a pic:

Shadow, love all three of yours…. I am fond of rippled leaves! Love the colors on Seducer as well. A beauty!

Ann, do you think it could be a reverting June to Halcyon??? Not really blue though. Although at certain times it can look green.

OMG. Way back before digital cameras, I put a h.Wide Brim leaf on the bed of my copier machine and printed a leaf. It looked hand painted with a water color brush, and I wanted to save that and see it when the hostas were dormant. Yes, I too was mesmerized by the beauty of that leaf. Got hooked on hostas. Yes, there's something about a hosta leaf....

utog thank you. What a nice thing to say!

Debra you did get a lot of beautiful leaf shots! Wave Runner is simply spectacular and GL BB is wonderful. I really only took a few pics and most were cropped.

Shadow I do like a rippled leaf and you have captured them perfectly.

old_dirt such great pics. I especially like Ann Kulpa & Hudson Bay.

Babka that is a great story. I too have often looked at a leaf and been mesmerized.

    Deb

those are a big daddy sport and a mcwilliams streaker. ive got 3 cups full of streakers of that mcwilliams this year. maybe 100 or so.

here is wildest dreams after it bleaches. the jetting shows more.
One that gets better and better later in the seaon.

another pic showing the anatomy of a leaf.
the primary veins and sub veins and the back epidermis are the scaffolding supporting the middle and out layers.

side by side chimera cells in the meristem with some overlap. streakers are randomly organized cells in the meristem and stable plants have united their chimeras.

wildest dreams has some of the most extensive overlap in the transition that i have seen in a white margined stable hosta. the effect is really pretty

I like the puckered leaves the best. And I like the word puckered too.

i have a very large Guardian Angel, I love the leaf pattern. I can't wait until they are up again. It's very windy and lots of rain today, no pips yet but it won't be long now that it's April.

Newhostalady, that pic of (maybe) Frances Williams—- I see the telltale burn. It’s actually a mistake in the breeding from what I’ve read.

debra, " a mistake in the breeding ", interesting I don't think I've heard that before.

According to hugos database frances williams came about as a sport of a seedling. in 1936 it was a big deal to have margined hosta of interest. So it became popular.

…today i would not introduce a plant with that flaw. there have been look a likes that have come after it that dont burn.

    From hugos database

Alex J. Summers Distinguished Merit Award 1986 (Caroline Williams).
Purchased by Mrs. Williams out of a batch of H. sieboldiana seedlings at Bristol Nursery, Connecticut in 1936.
Named by G. W. Robinson of the Oxford Botanical Gardens (1963).
20" tall. Light Shade. 50-90% shade.
This yellow edged sport of H. sieboldiana 'Elegans' is always at the top of the popularity list. The heavily corrugated round blue leaves are edged with a wide golden border. The 3' clumps are topped with white flowers in late spring. In areas of low humidity, or with any sun, the gold margin tends to sun scorch.

Old-dirt, that info is from the HL when you scroll down to the bottom of the page. That That’s how I learned about it. It actually says “it has a major fault in that brown areas appear in the gold margin.” (Viktoria Serafin)

My FW which is in a lot of shade still burns if any sunlight hits it directly. It's in the shade of an oak tree and is further protected by a hydrangea on the side and a magnolia on the other side. Still it will burn if I cut back any of the shrubs. The only one that burns even worse in my garden is Linda Sue, a Van Wade introduction named after his daughter. I have replanted Linda Sue 3 times, each in deeper shade and it still burns by July. Linda Sue is a sport of FW. I got my LInda Sue from Wade & Gatton, I doubt that you could find it elsewhere. But its edges burn to a crisp each year. The pictures of Linda Sue in the hosta library must have been taken in very early spring right after the leaves came out since it burned badly even in the shade at Wade & Gatton by early July.

Boy, do I miss Wade & Gatton. Wonderful memories of annual trips, packing a picnic lunch and spending the whole day there. Sigh.

Apparently, the "burn" on Frances Williams is not from too much sun.

    Taken from Hostalists.org:

    Bill Meyer wrote,
"I don't know how the word 'burn' came to be associated with this, but it is caused by edema - too much water in the leaves on cold rainy days. On the rainy days it looks like it is water-soaked as cells are bursting in the leaves. The next day the water is gone, and a week or so later the dead cells start turning whitish, then tan, then brown. If you go out on a cold rainy day you'll see it in the leaves. It only happens in spring when the leaves are still soft. Ones that do better in a lot of shade may be getting less water from the rain being blocked."
