First, neither makes a good container subject. They will need a specific type of potting soil and are frequently buried too deeply (a common cause of rhododendron/azalea failures). If containerized, they do best in a wide but quite shallow pot.

And then there are all the other challenges of container growing - maintaining correct soil moisture, fertilizing, monitoring pH and periodic root pruning.

Can they not be planted in the ground? They would be much happier and far easier to care for. Although I'm not sure it is even worth bothering with that now. Unless that is a type of deciduous azalea (and it doesn't look like one), then the plant is far more dead than alive and probably would not make the transition successfully.

Wow...Thank you so much for taking the time to post such an informative reply. It is a deciduous azalea, but, yeah, not looking too good. Do you think it is worth trying to replant it into the ground? I had 2 lemon trees that were in huge pots, but, nonetheless, were thrilled when they got into the ground and are bearing lots of lovely lemons.
